Abstract

PURPOSE: To let the wavelength region where the optical change of a crystalline electrochromic material having porous structure occurs even in a state where ions and electrons have been absorbed substantially deviate from visible region by using said material.
CONSTITUTION: A porous and amorphous thin film of WO3 is formed preferably by a vacuum evaporation method on the transparent electrodes provided on a transparent glass substrate. Next, this thin film is fired at a temperature of 350 to 450°C, as a result of which nearly the entire part crystallizes. When voltage is applied between the electrolyte layer and the transparent electrodes in contact with such thin film, its electrochromic characteristics change considerably from those when it is amorphous and the main region of the optical change accompanied by the absorption of ions and electrons has moved to near infrared and virtually no change occurs in the visible light region. The response speeds at the coloring and decoloring and their reversible changes at the voltage application are perfect.
