Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance contrast and response without requiring intricate production processes by providing light scattering or light shielding characteristic to the electrochromic layer itself thereby forming the reflection type electrochromic display element.
CONSTITUTION: A transition metal compound such as tungsten oxide is dissolved in a solvent like n-butanol, whereby nearly the even solution is prepared. Next, the abovementioned solution is coated and dried on a glass substrate 1 which has beforehand been provided with required transparent electrode layer 2. The coating is then whitened to ground glas form, whereby an electrochromic layer 3 provided with light shielding and light scattering characteristic is formed. Next, a glass substrate 1' provided with an electrolyte layer 4 and transparent electrodes 2' is laminated and disposed by an ordinary method, whereby the display element is formed. The concentration of the solution used in forming the abovementioned electrochromic layer 3 is preferably about 5 to 50wt% and coating the solution in air or in water vapor atmosphere by a spray, spinner or like method suffices.
