Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a surface luminous lighting unit which operates at a low voltage without lessening the contrast of display in the daytime, by using a transparent thin film of an electro-luminescence substance for lighting up a watch display part.
CONSTITUTION: With high-purity zinc sulfide powder, 3.0wt% of manganese powder is mixed and after pressing, the mixture is sintered by heating at 900°C under a vacuum to obtain pellets, which are molten by an electron beam to form transparent thin-film electroluminescence (EL) layer 4. On both side of layer 4, indium oxide is vapor-deposited to form transparent electrodes 3 and 5, thereby obtaining a transparent thin-film EL light. The EL light like this lights up the liquid-crystal panel made of polarizing plates 1a and 1b, liquid-crystal cell 2, and reflecting plate 6.
