PURPOSE:To make symbol display identifiable in the nighttime as well, to make the thickness of a liquid crystal layer uniform, to eliminate the need for providing an illuminating device in the cell and to reduce electric power consumption by disposing spacers coated with phosphor in the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A soln. prepd. by dissolving phosphor such as coumalin 6 expressed by the equation, rhodamine B, fluoresceine or the like together with a binder resin in a solvent is coated on glass fibers to make spacers 5 which are disposed between substrates 1, 1 provided with transparent electrodes 2, whereby the substrates are sealed 4. It is equally well to coat a fluorescent material 8 on plastic particles 7 in lieu of the glass fibers. In this way, the liquid crystal display is made distinctly identifiable over a long time in the nighttime without illumination.
