Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate heating of cathode in a character display unit by employing a cold cathod having a planar electron emitting portion as a fluorescent excitation electron source.
CONSTITUTION: A cold cathod is composed by disposing a transparent electrode 2, insulator layer 3, 4 and electrode 5 on a transparent glass substrate. Strong electric field electron emitting portion 6 is limited by the insulator layer 4. The cold cathode structure thus composed is welded to a container 7 formed by alumina at a glass substrate 1 to form a character display unit with an anode 8 and a fluorescent unit 9.
