Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the breakout accident and deterioration of surface characteristic of slag occuring in the solidified shell sticking on mold walls by disposing a rotating magnetic field generating means to the horizontal mold and giving stirring and rotating action to the molten steel in the horizontal mold. CONSTITUTION:Horizontal molten steel flow 11 is poured into the water-cooled type horizontal mold 3 consisting of a mold body 3a, water jacket 3g, molding member 3b, rotating magnetic field generating means 3c such as 2-pole 3-phase motor stator, water feed pipe 3e and water discharge pipe 3f, through a pouring nozzle 2, by which a solidified shell 8' is formed and casting is done. The molten steel in the mold 3 becomes a stirring and rotating flow 11' by the rotating magnetic field generated by the electromagnetic coil 3c, and this eliminates the defects such as asymmetrical solidification of conventional methods, permits the stable horizontal casting, improves productivity and enables the slab having uniform internal quality to be cast.
