Abstract

PURPOSE:To form the central part of a continuously cast ingot to equi-axed crystal structure and to prevent the formation of V segregation and microporosties, in a vertically drawing continuous casting method, by agitating molten steel electromagnetically in the position just befor completion of solidification of the unsolidified molten steel in said ingot. CONSTITUTION:In the case of drawing a continuously cast ingot in a vertical direction with a vertical type continuous casting installation, an electromagnetic agitator 3 is disposed in the position just before the completion of the solidification of the unsolidified molten steel part in the continuously cast ingot 2 out from a mold 1, and the unsolidified molten steel part in the ingot 2 is electromagnetically agitated. The fluidity of te unsolidified molten steel in the ingot in the stage of the final solidification is improved, and equi-axed crystals are formed efficiently in following up to the decrease in volume in accordance with the solidification, whereby the formation of V segregation and microporosities is prevented and the solidified structure in the continuously cast ingot is made to the dense structure of excellent internal characteristics.
