Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the formation of V segregation and to produce an ingot of superior quality by stirring the molten steel in a mold near its meniscus electromagnetically, and further stirring the molten steel in the unsolidified parts in a secondary cooling zone electromagnetically. CONSTITUTION:The molten steel in a mold near its meniscus is stirred by a primary electromagnetic stirrer 2, by which a large amt. of crystal nuclei necessary for obtaining fine isometric crystal structure are formed in the molten steel in the mold. A large amt. of such crystal nuclei are fed efficiently down to the final solidified parts by the stirring of the unsolidified parts by means of a secondary electromagnetic stirrer 3, and consequently the superior ingot structure is obtained. Thereby, the formation of V segregation and white bands is obviated and since high isometric crystal grains are obtained, the fine cast structure is obtained and the superior ingot product is cast.
