Abstract

PURPOSE:To cast an ingot of uniform quality free from any defect such as center porosity horizontally and continuously irrespectively of its sectional shape by electromagnetically stirring molten steel in a mold or in an ingot guide zone. CONSTITUTION:This continuous horizontal casting device for steel is constituted of a ladle 1, a tundish 2 provided below the same, a mold 3 provided in the lower part of the side walls of the tundish 2 via retainers 4, etc. Further, guide rolls 5, pinch rolls 6, and an electromagnetic stirrer 7 giving rotating flow around the ingot axis to molten steel are provided on the ingot outlet side of the mold 3. In this constitution, a large amt. of crystal nuclei are formed and a large amt. of fine isometric crystal grains are formed in order to stir the molten steel in the mold 3 around the ingot axis by the device 7. Hence, the ingot of uniform quality free from defects such as center porosities is obtained by solidifying the ingot well.
