Abstract

PURPOSE:To fine the solidification structure of the axial center part of an ingot and to produce the sound ingot free from central segregation and macroporosity by moving the isometric crystal grain pieces formed by stirring molten steel electromagnetically to the crater end side by means of an electromagnetic stirrer in continuous horizontal casting of steel. CONSTITUTION:Molten steel conducted from a tundish is drawn horizontally through a charging nozzle 6 via a mold 7. Thence, the molten steel in the unsolidified ingot in a secondary cooling zone is stirred by a linear type electromagnetic stirrer 9 in the front stage whereby a large amt. of isometric crystal grain pieces 12 are formed. Next, while these pieces 12 are moved to a crater end 11 side without settling by means of a linear type electromagnetic stirrer 10 in the rear stage, the steel is cast horizontally and continuously.
