Description
ヘッドライト装置100は、これらの図にも示すように、基本的には、光源装置である可視光照明ユニット10と、当該照明ユニットからの出射照明光を車両1の前方空間、お
よび車両1が走行する路面上に照射するための光学系である、いわゆる、プロジェクタレンズ50とから構成されている。更には、プロジェクタレンズ50に替えて、反射ミラー60を用いて投射光学性を構成してもよく、あるいは、図3(b)にも示すように、プロジェクタレンズ50と反射ミラー60の双方から構成されてもよい。
本発明の光源装置である可視光照明ユニット10は、表面上に、後にも述べる一つまたは複数の固体光源である半導体光源素子LED(Light Emitting Diode)やその制御回路等を実装したLED基板11を含んでおり、当該基板の裏面には、LEDからの発熱を周囲の空気に放散するためのヒートシンク12が取り付けられている。なお、本例では、合計15個のLEDが、LED基板11上で、5(横)×3(縦)の格子状に配置されている。更に、LED基板11の発光面側には、以下に述べるコリメータユニット13が取り付けられている。
偏光方向変換装置20は、後にも説明する制御信号により、車両の走行シーンに最適な、即ち、光路面の状態等に応じて可視光照明ユニット10からの照明光を適宜その偏光方向を含めて変更・調整(制御)する機能を実現するものである。具体的には、本実施例では、図7にも示すように、TN型(Twisted Nematic)LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)により構成されており、可視光照明ユニット10からの照明光が照射される路面に対応するLCDの表面位置を通過する照明光を、その偏光方向を含めて制御するものである。
図12(a)および(b)には、上記でその基本的な構成を述べた車両用のヘッドライト装置100において、更に、偏光方向変換装置20である液晶パネル(LCDパネル)の出射側に偏光ミラーまたは偏光板30を傾斜して設けた構成を示す。かかる構成によれば、偏光方向変換装置20を構成するLCDパネルのオン/オフを制御することによって配光を細かく制御することで、対向車線を走行する車や同一車線を走行する車への眩惑を抑制しつつ、遠方の視認性を確保した照明が可能となる。また、偏光方向変換装置20を構成するLCDパネルを、例えば、カラーの液晶表示素子(具体的には、ここでは図示しないが、図7のLCDパネルガラス基板の一方にカラーフィルタを設ける)とすることにより、自車両の走行速度や方向などを含めた運転状態を示す情報やその他の車両の運転に関する各種の情報を、照明光を利用して、夜間に限らず、昼間においても、路上に表示するようにしてもよい。
更に、図17には、上記実施例1または2の構成に加えて、ヘッドライト装置の内部において、シェード60を設けた構成の例を示す。なお、このシェード60は、車両がすれ違う際に発生する、自動車用灯具からの光線が互いにすれ違うビーム(いわゆる、ロービーム)に対して要求されるヘッドライトカットライン(配光)を形成することを可能にするものである。図にも示すように、このシェード60は、遮光部材により所定の形状に形成した部材によって構成されており、プロジェクタレンズ50の焦点近傍に配置されて固定される。
更に、図18には、上記実施例の構成の変形として、LCDパネル20に対して、光源装置である可視光照明ユニット10が小さい場合の構成例を示す。
LCDパネル20に対して可視光照明ユニット10が小さい場合には、自由曲面レンズ15により、偏光変換素子14から照射される略平行光を、LCDパネル20のサイズに
合わせて絞り込む必要がある。図18において、自由曲面レンズ15は、入射面と出射面をそれぞれ凸形状とすると共に、偏光変換素子とLCDパネル20の距離を長くとることで、絞り込みを実現している。また、小さなLCDパネル20からの光を、プロジェクタレンズ50を介して、広い配光角で光を放射するために、プロジェクタレンズ50の焦点距離を短くし、LCDパネル20とプロジェクタレンズ50の距離を短くしている。

- 車両用のヘッドライト装置であって、
光を発生する光源装置と、
前記光源装置の光軸上に配置され、前記光源装置からの光が所望の配光分布を形成するように投射する光学手段と、

前記光源装置からの光の偏光方向を変える偏光方向変換装置と、を備え、
前記光源装置から出射された光の光軸上において、前記光源装置、前記偏光方向変換装置、前記光学手段の順に配置されており、
前記偏光方向変換装置は、液晶パネルにより構成され、
前記偏光方向変換装置を構成する前記液晶パネルの出射側の偏光板は、入射側の偏光板の偏光の遮光率よりも小さな遮光率を有している、ヘッドライト装置。
