Description
本発明は、「側面放射LED(Side Emitting LED)」と題される、西暦2001年5月4日付け米国特許出願シリアル番号09/849,042、及び「LEDレンズ(LED Lens)」と題される、西暦2001年5月4日付け米国特許出願シリアル番号09/849,084とに関係する。これらの出願の両方が、本願出願人に譲渡され、且つそれらの全体がここに参考として組み込まれる。
他の実施の形態において、発光素子は、発光半導体素子及びレンズからなる。このレンズは、底面、反射面、レンズの中心軸に対して傾斜した角度の第1の屈折面、及び底面から第1の屈折面へスムーズな曲面として延びる第2の屈折面からなる。半導体素子によって放射され、底面を介してレンズに入り、反射面に直接入射される光は、反射面から第1の屈折面へ反射され、第1の屈折面によって屈折され、レンズの中心軸に略垂直な方向でレンズを出る。半導体素子によって放射され、底面を介してレンズに入り、第2の屈折面に直接入射する光は、第2の屈折面によって屈折され、レンズの中央軸に略垂直な方向でレンズを出る。
他の実施の形態において、レンズキャップは、レンズに取り付け可能な底面、反射面、レンズキャップの中心軸に対して傾斜した角度の第1の屈折面、底面から第1の屈折面へのスムーズな曲面として延びる第2の屈折面からなる。底面からレンズキャップに入り、反射面に直接入射する光は、反射面から第1の屈折面へ反射され、第1の屈折面によって屈折され、レンズの中心軸に対して略垂直な方向で、レンズキャップを出る。底面を介してレンズキャップに入り、且つ第2の屈折面に直接入射する光は、第2の屈折面によって屈折され、レンズキャップの中心軸に略垂直な方向でレンズキャップを出る。本発明のレンズは、上述したのと同様又は同じ利点を提供することができる。
図8は、平面光ガイド82の端部の斜視図を示している。側面放射LEDパッケージ40は、LEDパッケージ40を光ガイド82内に設置することを可能にする。一つ以上の穴86が光ガイド82内に作られ、対応する数のLEDアッセンブリ40が穴86内に設置される。穴86を、光ガイド82の全厚さをこれに限定されないが含む所望の深さで光ガイド82に作ることができる。LEDパッケージ40のレンズ44が、光ガイド82に接触しないこともできる。光ガイド82の内部照明を増大するために、反射コーティング又はフィルム84を、光ガイド82の少なくとも一端に設置することができる。
図9Bは、平面光ガイド82の漏斗状めくら穴98に取り付けられた側面放射LEDパッケージ40を図示している。漏斗状めくら穴98の頂部面93は、LEDパッケージ40のレンズ44の漏斗状部分58と略平行である。めくら穴は、LEDから放射される光を光ガイドに再度向けることを助けるために平坦面、漏斗状面、又は曲面を有することができる。
図10は、平面光ガイド82の貫通孔96に取り付けられた側面放射LEDパッケージ40を図示している。貫通孔96は、LEDパッケージ40を、光ガイド82に略垂直に取り付けることを可能にする。
図12に示される様に、従来のLEDパッケージ10よりもより幅の広い面積に渡って光を放射するために、浅い大断面積反射体102を、側面放射LEDパッケージ40と組み合わせて使用することができる。レンズの縦方向パッケージ軸116は反射体102の放射軸122に略平行である。光の側面放射は、従来の反射体92(図11)よりも、反射体102の壁がより深く無いことを可能にする。光はLEDパッケージ40の縦方向パッケージ軸116に略垂直にレンズ144から放射される。側面放射LEDパッケージ40は、従来のLEDと比較して浅い広い面積の反射体で極めて高い収集係数を可能にする。浅い反射体102は、従来のLEDアッセンブリ10組み合わせて使用される狭い深い反射体92よりもより幅の広い面積に渡って光を平行にする。浅い、広い面積の反射体102は、BMCバルク成形化合物、PC、PMMA、PC/PMMA及びPEIから作ることができる。反射体102の内部を被う反射フィルム120を、例えば、アルミニュウム(Al)及びニッケルクロム(NiCr)を含む高反射材料で金属化、スパッター等することができる。側面放射LEDは、従来のLED/深い反射体の組合せよりも深い又は浅い反射体を有するより高い収集係数を達成することができる。
図14に図示される光線軌跡及び図13をここで参照する。レンズ152の焦点Fに近接して位置されるLED52の様な発光素子によって放射される光は、レンズの底面158を通してレンズ152に入ることができる。反射面Iに直接入射する焦点F近くから放射される光は、面Iから屈折面Hへ反射され、面Hで屈折され、レンズの中心軸43に実質的に垂直な方向でレンズ152を出る。屈折面156に直接入射する焦点F近くから放射される光は、面156によって屈折されて、軸43に実質的に垂直な方向でレンズ152を同様に出る。
図15は、単一の屈折鋸歯を含むレンズ160の断面(点線)に重ねてレンズ152の断面を示している。単一の屈折鋸歯のみを有することを除いて、レンズ160は、上述したレンズ44と構造及び機能が実質的に類似している。図15に示されるレンズ152及び160の使用は、実質的に類似のLEDを実質的に類似のパッケージで使用するため最適化される。従って、レンズ152及びレンズ160の最下部は、サイズ及び形状か略同じである。
発光素子150は、他のLEDパッケージ及び発光素子に対して上述されたのと同様に、例えば、光ガイド、及び浅い、大面積反射体と共に採用することができる。
Claims (4)
- 底面、反射面、第1の屈折面、および第2の屈折面を具備するレンズであって、
第1の屈折面が、レンズの中心軸に対して傾斜した角度を有し、
第2の屈折面が、底面から第1の屈折面へ延び、
底面を介してレンズに入り且つ反射面に直接入射する光が、反射面から第1の屈折面へ反射され、第1の屈折面によって屈折されて、中心軸に実質的に垂直な方向でレンズを出、
底面を介してレンズに入り、第2の屈折面に直接入射する光が、第2の屈折面によって屈折され、レンズの中心軸に実質的に垂直な方向でレンズを出、そして、
第2の屈折面は曲面である
、レンズ。 - 反射面及び第1の屈折面は、漏斗状部分を形成する請求項1記載のレンズ。
- 漏斗状部分の中心軸を中心とする最大直径は、第2の屈折面を形成する部分の中心軸を中心とする最大直径よりも小さい請求項2記載のレンズ。
- 底面が、半球状レンズと嵌合する半球状の形状にされている請求項1記載のレンズ。
