Description
被毒させ、電池の効率を更に低下させることになる。燃料のクロスオーバといわれるこのことは、メタノールを燃料として用いた場合、特に問題となる。
(a)ベンゾフェノンの4,4’−ジハロ(又はジニトロ)−3,3’−ジスルホネート塩、ジハロ(又はジニトロ)ベンゾフェノン及びフタラジノンとフェノール基を含む単量体と極性溶剤若しくは主として極性溶剤を含む反応媒体中、金属塩基(又はその塩)を含む生成物を得るための触媒の存在下共重合し;
(b)共沸脱水剤を用いて高温度において生成物を脱水し;
(c)この生成物を溶剤で希釈し;
(d)凝固剤を用いて生成物を凝固し;
(e)生成物を分離し;
(f)この生成物を乾燥し;そして
(g)工程(c)から(f)を更に2回行ってスルホン化ポリ(フタラジノンエーテルケトン)を得る各工程を含むスルホン化ポリ(フタラジノンエーテルケトン)を製造する方法を提供する。
(a)フェニルスルホンの4,4’−ジハロ(又はジニトロ)−3,3’−ジスルホネート塩、ジハロ(又はジニトロ)フェニルスルホン及びフタラジノンとフェノール基を含む単量体とを極性溶剤若しくは主として極性溶剤を含む反応媒体中、金属塩基(又はその塩)を含む生成物を得るための触媒の存在下共重合し;
(b)共沸脱水剤を用いて高温度において生成物を脱水し;
(c)この生成物を溶剤で希釈し;
(d)凝固剤を用いて生成物を凝固し;
(e)生成物を分離し;
(f)この生成物を乾燥し;そして
(g)工程(c)から(f)を更に2回行ってスルホン化ポリ(フタラジノンエーテルスルホン)を得る各工程を含むスルホン化ポリ(フタラジノンエーテルスルホン)を製造する方法を提供する。
(a)アノードを準備し;
(b)カソードを準備し;
(c)上記アノードとカソードの間に重合体電解質膜を設けてアノードとカソードとを通意し、ここで重合体電解質膜は請求項1記載のイオノマーを酸の型で含み;
(d)上記カソードに燃料を供給し、ここでの燃料は分解してプロトンとエレクトロンを放出し;
(e)このプロトンを重合体電解質膜を通してアノードに送り;そして
(f)このエレクトロンを電力発生容器に回収する;
各工程を含む電力を発生させる方法を提供する。
イオン交換能力は、本願においては次の如くして当量を測定する。SO3H形態の重合体膜の0.5〜1.0gの乾燥重量を飽和塩化ナトリウム溶液に浸漬する。この重合体膜を含む得られた酸性溶液を0.1規定の苛性ソーダ溶液で処理する。次に示す式に従ってイオン交換能力から当量が決定される。

乾燥イオノマー固体重量(g)
約2×3インチ四方の大きさの膜サンプルを、まず21℃の室温状態で24時間、55%の相対湿度(RH)で平衝状態に保った。次いで、これを室温の脱イオン水を含むプラスチックビーカーに浸した。最初の測定を30分後、第2回目の測定を2時間として、2回の測定を2時間にわたって行った。測定するに当って、膜サンプルを水から取り出し、そして紙テシューで軽くたたいて乾燥した。次いで厚さのゲージはHeidenhain ND281デジタル表示に接続したMT60M Heidenhain(Schaumburg, Illinois)を使用して、直ちに厚さを測定した。このゲージは平板の上に直立に載っていて、そしてサンプルの中央及びすみを含めて異った8ヶ所の場所を測定できる。ゲージのスプリングによるプローブは各測定に際し押圧を最小限にするためフィルムの上におだやかに低く設けられている。8つの値の平均値をサンプルの厚さとした。膜10のイオン抵抗は、次いで図5に示した4点のプローブ導電率を用いて測定した。導電セル50の検出プローブ55は約1インチの長であって、約1インチ離れている。プレキシグラス(plexiglass)のスペーサー51はプローブ54と検出プローブ55との間を絶縁している。このセルはナイロンスクリュー52を有し、電気的接触は穴53を通してプローブに達している。測定の課程で、900グラム重量(示していないが)のものをセルに載せて良好に接触できる。抵抗値は導電セル50に更に押圧しても関係ないことが知られている。抵抗は、Scribner Associates によって書かれているZPロットソフトウェアーによってコントロールされているSolartron SI 1280Bを用いて周波数1000Hzで10mV AC振幅で穴53を通した接続リード(表示していない)で測定した。測定は電位(potentiostatic)の様式で行った。このような条件下では、位相角は測定の間中は意味のないことが分った。各測定でのS/cm単位での室温イオン導電率は次の式によって計算される。
メタノールの透過装置は固体重合体電解質のメタノール輸送抵抗の特性を評価するのに使用される。

上に述べたように、メタノール直接型燃料電池における固体重合体電解質の膜に2つの異った重要な特性が存在する。すなわち、イオン抵抗とメタノール輸送抵抗である。これら2つの組み合せを評価するために、次の如き式によって相対選択係数(RSF)が定義される。
この測定はメタノール直接型燃料電池(DMFE)のセルの中でRen, T.Zawodzinski Jr., F.Uribe, H.Dai and S.Gottesfeld Electrochem. Soc. Proc. Vol 95-23 p.284 First Intl. Symp. on Proton Conducting Membrane Fuel Cells I The Electrochemical Society (1995)に記載されているメタノールフラックス(flux)の電気的酸化によって生じた電気化学的に限られた電流を評価して行われる。
外部電力の供給又は静電位(potentiostat)は、次いで二極モード(作動電極はN2電極、カウンター(counter)参照電極はメタノール(燃料)電極)の中で電池を外部バイアスのために使用する。クロスオーバのメタノールの電気酸化はN2電極(作動電極)で次に示すレドックス反応に従って生ずる。
〈例1〉
2.5338g(6ミリモル)の3,3’−スルホニル(4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン)ジナトリウム塩、5.2368g(24ミリモル)の4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン、7.1474g(30ミリモル)の4(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、3.1796g(30ミリモル)の炭酸ナトリウム、40ミリリットルのトルエン、及び60ミリリットルのスルホキシドを、パージ用窒素供給路、冷却コンデンサー及び機械的撹拌機を有する三口壜に入れた。窒素ブランケットで保護した上で、この壜を190℃で8時間加熱して重合を行った。重合過程で水が発生するので、トルエンを用い共沸点において除去した。冷却後、反応生成物をジメチルスルホキシドで希釈し、1:1のエタノール/水混合物で凝固した。この凝固物を三回濾過し次いで真空炉の中で80℃で乾燥した。得られた生成物は粘度が1.08dl/g、ガラス転位温度が252℃そして熱重量損失が532℃で10%であった。
〈例2〉
5.0675g(12ミリモル)の3,3’−スルホニル(4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン)ジナトリウム塩、3.9276g(18ミリモル)の4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン、7.1474g(30ミリモル)の4(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、3.1796g(30ミリモル)の炭酸ナトリウム、40ミリリットルのトルエン、及び60ミリリットルのスルホキシドを、パージ用窒素供給路、冷却コンデンサー及び機械的撹拌機を有する三口壜に入れた。窒素ブランケットで保護した上で、この壜を190℃で8時間加熱して重合を行った。重合過程で水が発生するので、トルエンと共に共沸点において除去した。冷却後、反応生成物をジメチルスルホキシドで希釈し、1:1のエタノール/水混合物で凝固した。この凝固物を三回濾過し次いで真空炉の中で80℃で乾燥した。得られた生成物は粘度が3.38dl/g、ガラス転位温度が308℃そして熱重量損失が497℃で10%であった。

PPEK固体重合体電解質次の如くして製造した。Dean−Starkトラップ、コンデンサー及び窒素導入口を有する150mlの三口丸フラスコに、20ミリモルの4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、5,5−カルボニルビス(2−フルオロベンゼンスルホネート)と4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン(20ミリモル)の混合物、所要量のアルカリを、事前の40mlのDMSO及び45ミリリットルのトルエンの混合物に加えた。この混合物を3時間150℃で還流し、次いで過剰のトルエンを蒸留して取り除いた。この混合物を175℃で20時間加熱した。次に、この反応混合物を室温に冷却し、そして水に注いで共重合体を沈殿させた。この粗生成物を6回熱水で洗って無機塩を除いた。精製した重合体を濾過し、そして100℃で48時間真空で乾燥した。この得られた重合体は、R1及びR2が水素で、Mがナトリウムに相当するPPEK重合体であった。
〈例4〉
本発明の固体重合体電解質が燃料電池用の条件に関して評価するために、例3の酸の形態の本発明の固体重合体電解質、また2つの参考例としてNAFION(登録商標)膜117(比較例A)の酸の形態及びNAFION(登録商標)膜112の酸の形態(両者はE.I.DuPont de Nemours社から入手)をそれぞれ用いて膜電解質アセンブリ(MEA)を準備した。この二つの比較例は当量が1100の市場で入手できるペルフルオロスルホン酸固体重合体電解質である。この二つの物質は厚さが異なるのみであって、NAFION(登録商標)膜117は名目厚さが7ミル又は175ミクロン(Heidenhain ND2813デジタル表示のついたMT60M Heidenhain(Schaumburg, Illinois)の厚さゲイジを使用して測定すると、実際の厚さは179ミクロン)及びNAFION(登録商標)膜112は名目厚さが2ミル又は50ミクロン(実際の厚さは46ミクロン)である。乾燥状態で本発明の重合体は、Heidenhain ND281Bデジタル表示を有するMT60M Heidenhain(Schaumburg, Illinois)を用いて測定すると、36ミクロンの厚さである。
〈例4A〉
固体重合体電解質として比較例の二つのMEAを使用した燃料電池及び本発明の固体重合体電解質を使用したMEAを次に示す操作に従って組み立てた。例4のMEA(5cm2の活性表面積)を、標準燃料電池テスト具(Fuel Cell Technologies社により製造された5cm2、単一チャンネルの曲りのある流路面の8本のボルト)に載置した。MEAは組み立てる前にKrytox滑剤(デュポン社)でボルトを潤滑性にした。MEAは市場で入手した7milのシリコーンを浸漬したガラスクロース(Tate Engineering)のガスケットを使用して組み立ててアノードとし、そしてカソードには10milのガスケットを使用して組み立てた。全ガスケットは5cm2の窓を有していて、そして燃料電池具の全グラファイト面と3インチ×3インチのMEAの膜境界部とをそれで覆った。このアセンブリーは心合わせピンを使用することなら二つのプレートの間でガス漏れがないようにした。追加的なガス拡散媒体は使用しない。素子の配列及びアセンブリーについて、テスト具を45ポンド−インチ/ボルトの押圧を加えてねぢり次いで8本のボルトで星の配置で5ポンド−インチでとめた。トルク−レンチ(最大75ポンド−インチのトルク)を使用して、電池を所望の位置に載置した。最終的には電池は燃料電池ステーションで負荷をかけて使用する前に、電流コレクターと押圧板との間に電気的なショートがないかどうかをチェックした。
〈例5〉
例4で記載したスクリーニング用NAFIONベースの拡散電極(GDE)を使用し、同じ市場で入手できる電極(イオノマーを含まない)及び同じイオノマー浸漬物を用いて、本発明のイオノマーを有する電極DMFCアノード及びカソードの原型品を用意した。
〈例6〉
市場で入手できる例4の電極(PTFE結合の白金黒ベースのGDE)を使用して原型品のメタノール許容/不感受性カソードを準備した(イオノマーを含まない)。5cm2の電極を例5に示した溶液(3%の固体)に完全に浸し、そしておだやかに撹拌して全体を飽和させると共に重合体を浸透させた。過剰のイオノマーを除くために紙タオルで拭いて、そして浸漬した電極を真空炉の中で一晩200℃で乾燥して残った溶剤を完全に除いた。この乾燥した電極を3Nの硝酸に浸し酸性型(H+)のイオノマーに変え、そして次に多量の脱イオン水で洗って過剰の硝酸を取り除いた。この原形型のカソードGDEは約0.5mg/cm2の乾燥イオノマーを飽和状態で含む4.0mg/cm2白金黒金属触媒を構成する。
〈例7〉
複合膜を次の如くして準備した。例5で示したように、例3の固体重合体電解質を使用して、3%固体のジメチルスルホキシド溶液を生成した。この溶液をエタノールで半分に希釈して1.5%固体の50/50のジメチルスルホキシド/エタノール溶液とした。次に、この溶液を、USP RE37,307(Bahar)に開示された方法に従って22ミクロンの厚さの延伸(expanded)したポリテトラフルオロエチレン(PTFE)の支持体に含浸させた。このPTFEを4インチの縫取りしたフープ(embroidery hoop)に固定した。このPTFE支持体の両面にイオノマー溶液を塗り付け、そしてヘヤードライヤーで乾燥して溶剤を取り除いた。この塗り付けと乾燥工程を更に4回繰り返した。このPTFEと縫取りしたフープを炉の中で190℃で10分間加熱して完全に溶媒の全部の痕跡をも取り除いた。次に、このサンプルを炉から取り出し、室温に冷却し、そして最終的には縫取りしたフープを取りはずした。このPTFE/固体重合体電解質複合膜は透明であって、固体重合体電解質による完全に浸透した支持体である。
〈例8〉
1.2834g(2.8ミリモル)の3,3’−スルホニルビス(4−フルオロフェニルスルホン)ジナトリウム塩、1.0679g(4.2ミリモル)のビス(4−フルオロフェニル)スルホン、1.6677g(7ミリモル)の4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、1.1609g(8.4ミリモル)の炭酸カリウム、30ミリリットルのトルエン及び20ミリリットルのテトラメチレンスルホンを窒素パージ用供給路、冷却コンデンサー及び機械的撹拌機を有する三口壜に入れた。窒素ブランケットで保護した上で、この壜を200℃で10時間加熱して重合を行った。重合過程で水が発生するので、トルエンを用い共沸点において除去した。冷却後、反応生成物をテトラメチレンスルホンで希釈し、水の中で凝固した。この凝固物を三回濾過し次いで真空炉の中で100℃で乾燥した。得られた生成物は粘度が1.74dl/gであって熱重量損失が533℃で10%であった。
〈例9〉
0.9625g(2.1ミリモル)の3,3’−スルホニルビス(4−フルオロフェニルスルホン)ジナトリウム塩、1.2459g(4.9ミリモル)のビス(4−フルオロフェニル)スルホン、1.6677g(7ミリモル)の4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、1.1609g(8.4ミリモル)の炭酸カリウム、30ミリリットルのトルエン及び20ミリリットルのテトラメチレンスルホンを窒素パージ用供給路、冷却コンデンサー及び機械的撹拌機を有する三口壜に入れた。窒素ブランケットで保護した上で、この壜を200℃で10時間加熱して重合を行った。重合過程で水が発生するので、トルエンを用い共沸点において除去した。冷却後、反応生成物をテトラメチレンスルホンで希釈し、水の中で凝固した。この凝固物を三回濾過し次いで真空炉の中で100℃で乾燥した。得られた生成物は粘度が1.454dl/gであって熱重量損失が534℃で10%であった。
固体重合体電解質を使用した時の本発明の重合体の有用性を見るために、例4Aの燃料電池を電池診断用の燃料電池テスト具に接続した。この燃料電池テスト具は、電子負荷、ガスコントロールユニット、メタノール注入部及びその他補助具(コンデンサー、ガスラインの熱トレイシング等)から成る。この電子負荷(electronic load)はScriber & Assoc.(VA)10Aモデル890B−100であって、燃料電池モードH2/空気及びメタノール/空気の分極分析に使用されるものである。この電子負荷の箱体は、電池用の標準温度調節器及び反応体給湿器を有している。この負荷はデーター取得及び分析用のPCランニングScriber & Assoc.燃料電池ソフトウェア(バージョン3.1a)を有している。
Claims (41)
- モノマーAは4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノンを含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーBは3,3’−スルホニル(4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン)ジナトリウム塩を含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーCは4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノンを含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーAは4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、モノマーBは3,3’−スルホニル(4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノン)ジナトリウム塩、そしてモノマーCは4,4’−ジフルオロベンゾフェノンを含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーBは3,3’−スルホニルビス(4−フルオロフェニルスルホン)ジナトリウム塩を含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーCはビス(4−フルオロフェニル)スルホンを含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- モノマーAは4−(4−ヒドロキシフェニル)フタラジノン、モノマーBは3,3’−スルホニルビス(4−フルオロフェニルスルホン)ジナトリウム塩、そしてモノマーCはビス(4−フルオロフェニル)スルホンを含む請求項1記載のイオノマー。
- 下記の式のモノマーAとモノマーB及びモノマーCとをモノマーA1モルに対して少なくとも2モルのアルカリ金属塩基を含む不活性中性溶媒と混合した共沸溶剤中で反応させて得た反応混合物を含むイオノマーであって、ここでモノマーB及びモノマーCの合計したモル数がモノマーAのモル数に等しく、この反応は水の存在下共沸溶剤の共沸点より高い温度で水の共沸物を除去することによって行われ、また、下記の式において、いずれのR1〜4は独立して水素、線状若しくは枝分れしたアルキル基、芳香族基、又はハロゲン;
X1及びX2は独立してカルボニル若しくはスルホン残基であり、又はケトン若しくはスルホン結合によって結合した芳香族基;
Yはハロゲン;そして
Mはアルカリ金属である、前記イオノマー。
- (a)フェニルスルホンの4,4’−ジハロ(又はジニトロ)−3,3’−ジスルホン酸塩、ジハロ(又はジニトロ)フェニルスルホン、及びフタラジノンとフェノール残基を含むモノマーを、極性溶剤又は主として極性溶剤を含む反応媒体中で、金属塩基(又はその塩)を含む触媒の存在下で共重合させて、生成物を製造し;
(b)この生成物を、共沸脱水剤を用いて高温で脱水し;
(c)この生成物を溶剤で希釈し;
(d)この生成物を、凝固剤を用いて凝固し;
(e)この生成物を凝固剤から分離し;
(f)この生成物を乾燥し;そして
(g)工程(c)から(f)を更に2回行って
スルホン化ポリ(フタラジノンエーテルスルホン)を製造する方法であって、
前記のフタラジノン及びフェノール残基を含むモノマーは次に示す式を有する、前記の製造方法
- (a)アノードを準備し;
(b)カソードを準備し;
(c)上記アノードとカソードの間に重合体電解質膜を設けてアノードとカソードとを通意し、ここで重合体電解質膜は請求項1記載のイオノマーを酸の型で含み;
(d)上記カソードに燃料を供給し、ここでの燃料は分解してプロトンとエレクトロンを放出し;
(e)このプロトンを、重合体電解質膜を通してアノードに送り;そして
(f)このエレクトロンを電力発生容器に回収する;
各工程を含む電力を発生させる方法。 - 重合体電解質膜は重合体に実質的に吸蔵されている相互に連絡した流路及び通路を有する重合体支持体を含む請求項13記載の方法。
- 重合体支持体は延伸(expanded)したポリテトラフルオロエチレンである請求項13記載の方法。
- 燃料はメタノールである請求項13記載の方法。
- 燃料は水素である請求項13記載の方法。
- 燃料はメタノールである請求項14記載の方法。
- 燃料は水素である請求項14記載の方法。
- 燃料はメタノールである請求項15記載の方法。
- 燃料は水素である請求項15記載の方法。
- 膜は請求項1記載の酸の型であるイオノマーを含有する重合体電解質膜。
- イオノマーに実質的に吸蔵されている相互に連絡した流路及び通路を有する重合体支持体を更に含む請求項22記載の重合体電解質膜。
- 重合体支持体は延伸(expanded)したポリテトラフルオロエチレンである請求項23記載の重合体電解質膜。
- (a)アノード;
(b)カソード;及び
(c)重合体電解質膜であって上記アノードとカソードの間に存在してアノードとカソードとを通意し、ここでの重合体電解質膜は請求項1記載のイオノマーを酸の型で含んでいる;
を包含する膜電極アセンブリー。 - 重合体電解質膜はイオノマーに実質的に吸蔵されている相互に連絡した流路及び通路を有する重合体支持体を含む請求項25記載の膜電極アセンブリー。
- (a)アノード;
(b)カソード;及び
(c)重合体電解質膜であって上記アノードとカソードの間に存在してアノードとカソードとが通意し、ここで少なくともアノード及びカソードの一つは請求項1記載のイオノマーを含んでいる;
を包含する膜電極アセンブリー。 - (a)アノード;
(b)カソード;及び
(c)重合体電解質膜であって上記アノードとカソードの間に存在してアノードとカソードとを通意し、ここでの重合体電解質膜は請求項1記載のイオノマーを酸の型で含み;
(d)ここでの重合体電解質膜は1.0より大きい相対選択係数(relative selectivity factor)を有している、膜電極アセンブリー。 - 相対選択係数は1.3である請求項28記載の膜電極アセンブリー。
- (a)アノード;
(b)カソード;及び
(c)上記アノードとカソードの間に重合体電解質膜を設けてアノードとカソードとを通意し、ここで重合体電解質膜は請求項5記載のイオノマーを酸の型で含み;
これらを包含する膜電極アセンブリー。 - 膜電極アセンブリーは収電装置と電子的に通意して第1のガス拡散媒体及び第2のガス拡散媒体の間にサンドウィッチされて存在している請求項25記載の膜電極アセンブリーを含む燃料電池。
- 重合体電解質膜はイオノマーに実質的に吸蔵されている相互に連絡した流路及び通路を有する重合体支持体を含む請求項31記載の燃料電池。
- 重合体支持体は延伸(expanded)したポリテトラフルオロエチレンである請求項32記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池はメタノール直接型燃料電池である請求項31記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池は燃料として水素を用いる請求項31記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池はメタノール直接型燃料電池である請求項32記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池は燃料として水素を用いる請求項32記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池はメタノール直接型燃料電池である請求項33記載の燃料電池。
- 燃料電池は燃料として水素を用いる請求項33記載の燃料電池。
- 0.704Vのオープン回路電位を有する請求項31記載の燃料電池。
- 平均メタノールクロスオーバが0.124の測定値を有する請求項31記載の燃料電池。
