この発明は、複合ゲームシステムに関し、特に各々が個別ディスプレイを有する複数の携帯ゲーム機を1つのディスプレイに接続されたビデオゲーム機に接続し、各携帯ゲーム機およびビデオゲーム機で1つの連動ゲームをプレイすることができる、新規な複合ゲームシステムに関する。

【従来の技術】
携帯ゲーム機とビデオゲーム機とを用いるゲームシステムが、第1従来技術(特開平4−266781号公報:対応アメリカ特許第5,393,073号)あるいは第2従来技術(特開昭60−119977号公報)に開示されている。

第1従来技術には、携帯ゲーム機をビデオゲーム機に接続し、ゲームのための会話またはメッセージ等の分岐を携帯ゲーム機のディスプレイに表示し、携帯ゲーム機の操作器でその分岐を選択することによってゲームが進行される、ゲームシステムが開示されている。

第1従来技術では、分岐のメッセージを携帯ゲーム機に表示し、それを携帯ゲーム機で選択するだけであるので、各携帯ゲーム機では独自にゲームを進行できかつビデオゲーム機が各携帯ゲーム機を統括するようなゲーム(以下、「連動ゲーム」という。)をプレイすることができない。

第2従来技術においても、親機は子機の代わりをするだけであるから、子機と親機との連動ゲームをプレイすることはできない。

第1発明に従った複合ビデオゲームシステムは、共通ディスプレイに接続されるビデオゲーム機と、個別ディスプレイを有する携帯ゲーム機とを接続手段を介して接続した複合ゲームシステムであって、携帯ゲーム機は、ゲームのための操作に応じて、操作信号を出力する操作手段と、自己の携帯ゲーム用ゲームプログラムを記憶する第1のゲームプログラム記憶手段と、操作手段の出力と携帯ゲーム用プログラムとに基づいて、第1の表示データを発生して個別ディスプレイに表示させるとともに、ビデオゲーム機との連動ゲームのために必要な、プレイヤオブジェクトを表すユニットを示す情報であるユニット情報を処理する第1の処理手段と、ビデオゲーム機との間でユニット情報を送受信する送受信手段とを備え、ビデオゲーム機は、ビデオゲーム機の動作プログラムおよび連動ゲームのためのプログラムを記憶した第2のゲームプログラム記憶手段と、接続手段および送受信手段を介して携帯ゲーム機に送信しまたは携帯ゲーム機から受信したユニット情報と、操作手段の出力とを一時記憶する一時記憶手段と、第2のゲームプログラム記憶手段に記憶されているプログラムに基づいて第2の表示データを発生して共通ディスプレイに表示させるとともに、一時記憶手段に記憶されている携帯ゲーム機から受信したユニット情報および携帯ゲーム機の操作手段の出力に応答して連動ゲームのための表示データを発生して共通ディスプレイに表示させる第2の処理手段とを備え、ビデオゲーム機と携帯ゲーム機とが連動して1つの連動ゲームを実行できるようにした、複合ゲームシステムである。

【作用】
第1発明では、ビデオゲーム機は、共通画面ディスプレイに接続され、携帯ゲーム機は個別画面ディスプレイを有する。携帯ゲーム機の操作手段が操作されると、その操作信号が第1の処理手段に送信され、第1の処理手段では、その操作信号および携帯用ゲームプログラムに従って各ユニットを処理する。具体的には、操作信号に応じて、各ユニットの移動や動作のための演算を実行し、プレイヤオブジェクトを表すユニットを示す情報であるユニット情報を得る。そして、携帯ゲーム機では、携帯ゲーム機のそれぞれの個別画面を表示させるとともに、ユニット情報を、送受信手段によって、ビデオゲーム機に送信する。ビデオゲーム機では、携帯ゲーム機から受信したユニット情報を一時記憶手段に記憶し、そのユニット情報に従って第2の処理手段が共通画面を構築し、それを共通ディスプレイに表示させる。

この発明によれば、携帯ゲーム機とビデオゲーム機との複合ゲームシステムにおいて、1つの連動ゲームを楽しむことができる。そのとき、携帯ゲーム機の個別ディスプレイで表示される個別画面は他のプレイヤに対して秘匿性があるので、共通画面では各プレイヤに共通に通に知られてもよい情報を表示し、個別ディスプレイで他のプレイヤに知られないように個別画面を表示することによって、たとえばカードゲームや競馬ゲームあるいは他のロールプレイングゲーム等の連動ゲームを競争的に楽しむことができる。

この発明が向けられる複合ゲームシステム100の一例が図1に示される。この図1の複合ゲームシステム100は、複数(実施例では4台)の携帯ゲーム機10,…,10を通信ケーブル30によってビデオゲーム機20に接続し、かつビデオゲーム機20をたとえばCRT,液晶ディスプレイ,プラズマディスプレイ等のディスプレイ40に接続し、携帯ゲーム機10の各プレイヤが自己のゲーム機10とビデオゲーム機20およびディスプレイ40とを利用して、1つの連動ゲームをプレイするようにしたゲームシステムである。

ここで、携帯ゲーム機10は、たとえば、本件出願人の製造販売に係る「ゲームボーイ」(商品名)である。ビデオゲーム機20は、携帯ゲーム機10に比べて処理能力(たとえば、CPUのビット数,CPUの単位時間当たりのプログラム処理数,あるいは画像表現能力等)の高い32ビットまたは64ビットのような高度技術を採用した最近のビデオゲーム機(たとえば、本件出願人の製造販売に係る商品名「NintendoN64」(商品名)である。

このRAM15bに記憶されるバックアップデータは、ゲームソフトのジャンルまたは種類によって種々のデータであり得る。たとえば、ゲームソフトが動物,擬似ペットまたは架空動物(モンスター)等を捕獲したり捕獲した動物等を育成したり、自分の捕獲した動物と友達の捕獲した動物との間で対戦させるゲームの場合、バックアップデータは獲得キャラクタを特定する獲得キャラクタデータや獲得キャラクタの能力データや対戦に使用できる技等を表すデータである。また、ゲームがロールプレイングゲームの場合、バックアップデータは獲得したアイテムの種類と数,使用できる魔法の種類,経験値,ライフ等のデータとなる。さらに、ゲームの種類がスポーツゲームの一例の野球ゲームの場合、バックアップデータは過去の各チームの選手別の打率,ホームラン数,盗塁数,エラー率,防禦率,奪三振数や、トレーニング状態に応じた打力,走力,球速等となる。さらに、カードゲームの場合には、バックアップデータには、各携帯ゲーム機10のプレイヤの手持ちカード等のデータが含まれる。
