Description

このシステムは、ほぼテキサス州の上空、高度２２３００マイル（３５８８０ｋｍ）の対地静止軌道上の互いに数度の角度範囲内にある２つの衛星を用いるように設計されている。このような衛星の配置において、米国の互いに隣接した４８州内の任意の位置にある受信機は、同じ１つの受信用アンテナ・ディッシュ（ａｎｔｅｎｎａ ｄｉｓｈ）でしかもそのアンテナ・ディッシュの位置を変えずにその２つの衛星から両方の信号を受信することができる。その各衛星はそれぞれの偏波を用いて信号を送信する。受信アンテナ側では、適切な偏波を選んで信号を選択することにより、一方の衛星を選択してその衛星の信号を受信することができる。各衛星は、所定の周波数範囲の信号を受信用アンテナ・ディッシュに送信するための１６個のトランスポンダを搭載している。各トランスポンダは、複数のテレビジョン・チャンネル（例えば、６〜８個のチャンネル）を実質的に同時に伝送するために時分割多重の構成になっている。衛星の信号は、圧縮パケット形式で送信され、またテレビジョン信号と補助データ信号とを含んでいる。このシステムは２５６個ものチャンネル数を担持する容量があるので、分かりやすく操作が簡単な何らかのテレビジョン番組選択の方法および装置をユーザに提供する必要がある。
しかし、通常のアナログＶＨＦおよびＵＨＦ放送のテレビジョンを参考にしようとしても、その解決方法は次に挙げる理由からほとんど参考にならないことが分かった。通常の放送では、或るテレビ局のチャンネル番号は固定された周波数帯域に対応している。換言すれば、例えば米国のチャンネル６は８２−８８ＭＨｚの範囲を占有するように規定されている。非専門家である大部分のユーザにはテレビジョン放送帯域の周波数割当てに関する知識がない。その代わり、ユーザは受信機にチャンネル番号を入力することによって所望のチャンネルに同調させる。その受信機は、ユーザによるチャンネル番号の入力に応答して適当な帯域切換え命令および同調命令を生成して所望のチャンネルに同調する所要の同調動作を行うように、適当な情報を用いてプログラムされている。従って、テレビジョン受像機のチャンネル番号と周波数帯域との関係が放送規格に準拠していればよいだけなので、テレビジョン受像機の製造業者は、固定したチャンネル番号−周波数変換の回路構成を各テレビジョン受像機に組込むことができる。
この固定周波数の基準は放送業者にとって受け入れられるものである。なぜなら、彼等の送信装置は地上に位置するので保守を行う目的で容易に接近できるからである。送信器が故障した場合、修理することができ、放送局は、比較的短時間のうちに、その指定された周波数帯で“放送状態”に戻ることができる。対照的に、衛星用の固定周波数装置は、軌道を回っている衛星に接近することは実際には不可能なので、望ましくない。トランスポンダが故障した場合、そのトランスポンダはその後、永久に使用できなくなり、希望するテレビジョンの番組を受信するためにそのトランスポンダに同調するようにプログラムされた受像機は、使用に適する信号を受信しなくなるであろう。このような場合、受像機は希望するテレビジョンのチャンネルを失うことになる。
衛星受像機は、普通の自動プログラミング機能に類似した機能を遂行するようにプログラムすることもでき、その場合、テレビジョン受像機は、すべての有効なチャンネルを捜し、検出された各チャンネルを記録する。このようなシステムがトランスポンダの故障後に使用されると、故障したトランスポンダが見つけられ、新しい有効なトランスポンダが見いだされる（プログラミングは地上に基地を置く管制員により新しいトランスポンダに移されているものと仮定する）。次に、ユーザの受像機は、希望するチャンネルとこの新しいトランスポンダとを関連づけるために、内部のリマッピングを行わなければならない。しかしながら、衛星の電源モジュールが故障した場合、そのモジュールを電源とする数個のトランスポンダは直ちに送信を停止することもある。このような場合、数個の古いトランスポンダが行方不明になっていることがわかるのと同時に、数個の新しいトランスポンダが見つけられるので、上述した自動プログラミングによる方法は旨く働かない。このような場合、受像機は、受信した信号をその適正なチャンネルに割り当てることができない。更に、上述のように、各トランスポンダは６〜８チャンネルを伝送するので、故障したトランスポンダに割り当てられているいくつかのチャンネルは、まだ機能している数個のトランスポンダの間で分配される。その場合、受信アンテナはすべてのテレビジョン・チャンネルにアクセスするが、受像機には、移動されたそれらのチャンネルがどこにあるのか全くわからない。

本発明のシステムにおいて、或るテレビジョン番組を選択するのに必要な情報は、各受信機に固定的にプログラムされているのではなくて、各トランスポンダにより衛星から各受信機に断続的にダウンロードされる。そのテレビジョン番組選択情報は、マスタ番組ガイド（ＭＰＧ：Ｍａｓｔｅｒ Ｐｒｏｇｒａｍ Ｇｕｉｄｅ）として知られている１組のデータからなる。このデータは、テレビジョン番組名、その開始時間および終了時間、ユーザに対して表示される仮想チャンネル番号、および各仮想チャンネルを各トランスポンダ周波数と特定のトランスポンダによって送信される時分割多重データストリーム中の或る位置とに割当てる情報を互いに関係付けるものである。本発明に従うシステムにおいて、受信機そのものは、どのチャンネルがどこに存在するのか、即ちチャンネルが存在するトランスポンダの周波数およびデータストリーム中の位置（即ちデータ・タイムスロット）に関する情報を全く持っていないので、衛星から最初のマスタ番組ガイドが受信されるまではどのチャンネルにも同調することができない。
仮想チャンネルのコンセプトにより、仮想チャンネルの番号が部門別（例えば、スポーツ、映画、ニュース）に割り当てられる。これが実現すると、活動的仮想チャンネルと非活動的仮想チャンネルが得られる。すなわち、土曜日の午後のスポーツ競技に割り当てられた１０個の仮想チャンネルはゲームの終了後に非活動的にされ、例えば、２０個の映画チャンネルを維持するのに十分な帯域幅を提供する。従って、ユーザは、実際に利用できる帯域幅で維持されるよりもずっと多数のチャンネルを持っているような感じを受ける。換言すれば、仮想チャンネルのコンセプトにより、システムの帯域幅の時分割多重が得られる。また、仮想チャンネルのコンセプトにより、比較的広い帯域幅を必要とするテレビジョン番組（例えば、スポーツ競技）は、同じトランスポンダで送られる、それほど広い帯域幅を必要としない第２のテレビジョン番組（例えば“トーク・ショー”）からビットを“借用”する。従って、一定のトランスポンダの利用できる帯域幅は、必要に応じて、１つの仮想チャンネルから別の仮想チャンネルに再割当てすることができる。
有利なことに、このシステムは非常に融通性があり、いかなる番組も、ユーザにとって極めて明白な方法で、任意のマスタ番組ガイド伝送時間に、任意のトランスポンダまたはデータ・タイム・スロットに割り当てられ、または再び割り当てられ、ユーザが見るのは、変えられてない番組の題名と仮想チャンネルだけである。従って、複数のトランスポンダが故障する問題は、ユーザはそれが起きたことさえ知らずに、影響を受けたテレビジョン番組を、未使用のデータ・タイム・スロットを有する機能中のトランスポンダに素早く再割当てし、かつ新しい番組ガイドをユーザに伝送することにより解決することができる。
マスタ番組ガイドは、テレビジョン番組の映像・音声データと共にすべてのトランスポンダで伝送されることが好ましく、周期的に（例えば、２秒毎に）繰り返えされる。マスタ番組ガイドは暗号化されておらず、受信されて記憶されると直ちに、受像機で使用することができる。マスタ番組ガイドは、ひとたび受信されると、受像機内の記憶装置の中に保持され、周期的に（例えば３０分毎に）更新される。マスタ番組ガイドを保持することにより、必要な選択データが常に得られるので、テレビジョン番組が瞬時に選択される。テレビジョン番組を選択するためにマスタ番組ガイドを使用した後、それを廃棄する場合、新しい番組ガイドが獲得される間、少なくとも２秒の遅延が起こり、それから更に別のテレビジョン番組の選択が行われる。
上述のように、システムは数百の番組を送信する容量を有する。また、各番組は多数のサービスを含んでいる。但し、ここでサービスとは、ビデオ信号、オーディオ信号、クローズドキャプション（ｃｌｏｓｅｄ ｃａｐｔｉｏｎ）信号、または適当な受信機で実行可能なコンピュータプログラムを含めたその他のデータ、のような番組の成分（構成要素）を意味するものとして定義される。各番組の各サービスは固有のサービス成分識別子（ＳＣＩＤ、Ｓｅｒｖｉｃｅ Ｃｏｍｐｏｎｅｎｔ Ｉｄｅｎｔｉｆｉｅｒ）によって区別されている。各サービスの情報は所定量のデータ（例えば１３０バイト）のパケット形式で送信することができ、各パケットはそのサービスに対応する１つのＳＣＩＤを含んでいる。
図１には、複数のトランスポンダの中の１つから供給される典型的なデータストリームの形式が示されている。また、図２には、そのデータストリーム中の典型的なパケットが示されている。図１において、複数のボックス（四角形）のストリング（ｓｔｒｉｎｇ）は、或るトランスポンダによって送信される相異なる複数のテレビジョン番組の各成分を構成する複数の信号パケットを表している。同じ添字の付いた文字で示されたパケットは１つのテレビジョン番組の各成分を表す。例えば、Ｖ１、Ａ１およびＤ１で識別されるパケットは、番組１のビデオ、オーディオ、およびデータを表す。パケットのストリングの上段の行には、グループ（群）にまとめられた或る特定の番組の各成分が示されている。しかし、ストリング中の中段の行のパケット・シーケンスに示されているように、必ずしも特定の番組の各成分を１つのグループにまとめる必要はない。また、ストリング中の各パケットを特定の順序に配列する必要もない。
図１の下の部分に示されている複数のパケットのストリングは、時分割多重化された３つの番組、即ち番組１、２および３並びに番組ガイド（パケットＤ４）を表すパケットを表している。ここで、番組ガイドのデータがＳＣＩＤに基づいて番組の成分と仮想チャンネルとを互いに関係付けていることに、特に留意すべきである。各パケットは、図２に示されるようなプリフィックス（前置部）とペイロードとから構成されている。この例のプリフィックスは８ビット構成のバイトを２バイト分含んでおり、この２バイトが５つのフィールドを構成している。この５つのフィールドのうちの４つは各々が１ビット構成のフィールド（Ｐ、ＢＢ、ＣＦ、ＣＳ）であり、残りの１つのフィールドは１２ビット構成のフィールド（ＳＣＩＤ）である。ペイロード部分は、受信され処理される実際の情報を含んでいる。図２に示すように、例示のプリフィックスは、１ビットの優先フィールド（Ｐ）、重要な信号変化間の境界を示す１ビットの境界フィールド（ＢＢ）、ペイロードがスクランブル（暗号化）されているか否かを示す１ビットのフィールド（ＣＦ）、スクランブルされたペイロードをデスクランブル（解読）するためのデスクランブル用の２つの鍵（キー）のうちの１つを示す１ビットのフィールド（ＣＳ）、および１２ビットのＳＣＩＤからなる。パケットの残りの部分はペイロードからなり、そのペイロードにはペイロード・データの終了点の後に付加される誤りコード・パリティビットが含まれている。
マスタ番組ガイドは上述の定義に従ってフォーマット化されパケット化されたデータからなる。また、マスタ番組ガイドには特定のＳＣＩＤ、例えば００００ ００００ ０００１、が割当てられている。マスタ番組ガイドは４種類のシーケンス（順次）のデータブロックからなり、この４種類のシーケンス・データブロックは後述するようにＳＥＧＭ、ＡＰＧＤ、ＣＳＳＭ１・・・ＣＳＳＭｎｓｅｇ、およびＰＩＳＭ１・・・ＰＩＳＭｎｓｅｇで表記される。
マスタ番組ガイドは、一般的には、次の２時間分のテレビジョン番組のスケジュールを含んでいるが、受信機においてマスタ番組ガイド記憶用に割当てられたメモリのサイズ（容量）に応じて、４、６または８時間分のスケジュールを含んでいることもある。また、マスタ番組ガイドに加えて、１つ以上の特別番組ガイド（ＳＰＧ：Ｓｐｅｃｉａｌ Ｐｒｏｇｒａｍ Ｇｕｉｄｅ）が存在する。その特別番組ガイドは、例えば、後続する８時間分のテレビジョン番組スケジュールのような追加データを含んでいる。即ち、マスタ番組ガイドは現在のテレビジョン番組を選択するのに必要な全情報を保持し、特別番組ガイドは将来（もっと先）のテレビジョン番組に関する情報を含んでいる。特別番組ガイドは、必要に応じて衛星からダウンロードされるが、その情報のサイズが大きい（情報量が多い）のでメモリに長く保持されることはない。図４に示されているように、マスタ番組ガイドと特別番組ガイドの両方はインデックス（指標）“ｎｓｅｇ”を有する複数のセグメントまたは複数の部分（０〜１５）に区分され、そのインデックスは特別番組ガイドを含んでいるセグメントの現在の番号（ｃｕｒｒｅｎｔ ｎｕｍｂｅｒ ｏｆ ｓｅｇｍｅｎｔｓ）を示している。各セグメントは１００〜９９９の範囲の１つ以上の仮想チャンネル用の番組情報を担持している。図４は、仮想チャンネルを各セグメントに割当てる方法の一例を示しているに過ぎず、衛星のアップリンク・センタのオペレータの判断に基づいてこの例とは異なるグループ形態にまとめることもでき、実際にそのように行われる。特別番組ガイドの各セグメントは、２種類のシーケンス・データブロックＣＳＳＭ１・・・ＣＳＳＭｎｓｅｇおよびＰＩＳＭ１・・・ＰＩＳＭｎｓｅｇを含んでいる。これについてはさらに後で説明する。
図５ａ、図５ｂ、および図５ｃは、本発明による衛星伝送システムの番組データ構造を例示している。但し、その番組データ構造の全部が、仮想チャンネルの選択およびマスタ番組ガイドの更新と関連している訳ではない。以下、仮想チャンネルの選択およびマスタ番組ガイドの更新に関連する部分についてだけ説明する。図５ａ、図５ｂ、および図５ｃを参照すると、マスタ番組ガイドのセグメント・マップ（ＳＥＧＭ、Ｓｅｇｍｅｎｔ Ｍａｐ）ブロックは、チャンネル空間の複数のセグメントへの区分化およびそのセグメント数に関する情報を含んでいる。追加番組ガイド・データ（ＡＰＧＤ、Ａｄｄｉｔｉｏｎａｌ Ｐｒｏｇｒａｍ Ｇｕｉｄｅ Ｄａｔａ）ブロックは、活動状態（ａｃｔｉｖｅ）にある特別番組ガイド・セグメント、その位置（即ち、そのセグメントを担持している特定のトランスポンダ（Ｘｐｄｒ）、およびその各セグメントのＳＣＩＤを示す番組ガイド・マップを含んでいる。ＡＰＧＤブロックは、特定のテレビジョン番組の格付け（ｒａｔｉｎｇ）およびテーマに関する番組情報を含んでいる。また、ＡＰＧＤブロックは、特別番組ガイド・セグメントをそれぞれの仮想チャンネル名（ｖｉｒｔｕａｌ ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｎａｍｅ）、仮想チャンネル番号（ｖｉｒｔｕａｌ ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｎｕｍｂｅｒ）および内容のタイプ（ｃｏｎｔｅｎｔ ｔｙｐｅ）に関係付ける番組ガイド・マップを含んでいる。
マスタ番組ガイドおよび各特別番組ガイドは、チャンネル対サービス・セグメント・マップ（ＣＳＳＭ、Ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｔｏ Ｓｅｒｖｉｃｅ Ｓｅｇｍｅｎｔ Ｍａｐ）ブロックおよび番組情報セグメント・マップ（ＰＩＳＭ、Ｐｒｏｇｒａｍ Ｉｎｆｏｒｍａｔｉｏｎ Ｓｅｇｍｅｎｔ Ｍａｐ）ブロックを含んでいる。ＣＳＳＭブロックは、各対応するセグメント中のチャンネル名（ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｎａｍｅ）、コールサイン（ｃａｌｌ ｌｅｔｔｅｒｓ）、チャンネル番号（ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｎｕｍｂｅｒ）、タイプ（ｔｙｐｅ）のような特徴を規定することにより仮想チャンネルを記述している。ＰＩＳＭブロックは、対応するＣＳＳＭで記述された各仮想チャンネル中にある番組名（ｔｉｔｌｅ）、開始時間（ｓｔａｒｔ ｔｉｍｅ）、継続時間（ｄｕｒａｔｉｏｎ）、格付け（ｒａｔｉｎｇ）、およびカテゴリ（ｃａｔｅｇｏｒｙ）のような番組情報が連結されたリストを含んでいる。
次に、図３、図４、図５ａ、図５ｂ、および図５ｃに示されているデータ構造のうちの関連する部分を参照して、番組の選択方法を説明する。すなわち、図５ａ、図５ｂ、および図５ｃに示すデータ構造の多くの部分は、買物情報のような仮想チャンネル選択以外の機能に関するものであり、これらについては説明しない。図３を参照すると、ユーザは、カーソルを（遠隔制御用の上下左右各方向の各制御キーを操作して）番組ガイド・スクリーン表示の中の所望の番組名を含んでいるブロック位置に動かして、視聴用テレビジョン番組を選択する。遠隔制御手段の選択キーＳＥＬＥＣＴを押下すると、カーソルの現在のｘおよびｙ位置が求められて、仮想チャンネルおよび番組時間情報が導出される。
図４に示されているように、また上述したように、マスタ番組ガイドおよび特別番組ガイドは、セグメントに分割されている（例えば、たった１つのセグメントまたは１６個ものセグメントに分割されている）。番号が最も小さい仮想チャンネル（１００）は常にセグメントｓｅｇ（０）の第１のチャンネルとして割当てられる。各セグメントは、規定数の仮想チャンネル分のチャンネル情報および番組情報を含んでいる。カーソルのＸおよびＹ位置の情報から仮想チャンネル番号を導出して、その仮想チャンネル番号を使って特定の番組ガイド（マスタ番組ガイドまたは特別番組ガイドのいずれか一方）の適正なセグメントを指示（特定）して、特定のチャンネル情報および番組情報を検索する。具体的には、ＣＳＳＭ（Ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｔｏ Ｓｅｒｖｉｃｅ Ｓｅｇｍｅｎｔ Ｍａｐ）中のチャンネル情報（ＣＩ）レコード（Ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ Ｉｎｆｏｒｍａｔｉｏｎ Ｒｅｃｏｒｄｓ）は、固定長１７バイトになっていて、使用するＳＣＩＤの数（ｎｕｍｂｅｒ ｏｆ ＳＣＩＤｓ）（一般的には２、オーディオおよびビデオ）、チャンネル・トランスポンダ（Ｃｈａｎ Ｘｐｎｄｒ）、チャンネル番号（Ｃｈａｎｎｅｌ ｎｕｍｂｅｒ）および短縮名称（ｓｈｏｒｔ ｎａｍｅ）（即ち、一般的には４つのキャラクタ（文字））、および連結された番組情報（ＰＩ）に対するポインタのような項目を含んでいる。任意の特定のチャンネル情報（ＣＩ）をアクセスするには、基準値（ｂａｓｅ ｖａｌｕｅ）に１７を単に繰返し加算すればよい。番組情報は、番組の開始日時（ｓｔａｒｔ ｄａｙ， ｓｔａｒｔ ｔｉｍｅ）、占有する３０分のスロットの数（ｎｕｍｂｅｒ ｏｆ ｔｈｉｒｔｙ ｍｉｎｕｔｅ ｓｌｏｔｓ）、テーマのカテゴリ（即ち、ドラマ、スポーツ、コメディー）および親による格付け（ｐａｒｅｎｔａｌ ｒａｔｉｎｇ）を含んでいる。
いったん所望のテレビジョン番組を担持しているチャンネル・トランスポンダに同調されると、データ・パケットの適切なＳＣＩＤ（Ｓｅｒｖｉｃｅ Ｃｏｍｐｏｎｅｎｔ Ｉｄｅｎｔｉｆｉｅｒ）の１２ビットのコードを調べることによって、そのトランスポンダから受信されたデータストリームの中からその番組のオーディオおよびビデオ情報を含んでいるデータ・パケットを選択することができる。新しく受信したデータ・パケットのＳＣＩＤが番組ガイドに載っている所望のテレビジョン番組のＳＣＩＤと一致すると、そのデータ・パケットは受信機の適正なデータ処理部にルーティング（ｒｏｕｔｅ）される。その特定のパケットのＳＣＩＤが番組ガイドに載っている所望のテレビジョン番組のＳＣＩＤと一致しないときは、そのデータ・パケットは捨てられる。
次に、上述の発明を構成するのに適したシステムのハードウェア構成を簡単に説明する。図６において、送信機６０１は信号源６１４（例えば、テレビジョン信号源）のデータ信号を処理してそれを衛星６１３に送信し、衛星６１３はその信号を受信して受信機６１２に対して放送する（ｒｅｂｒｏａｄｃａｓｔ）。送信機６０１は、符号化器６０２、変調器／順方向（前進型）誤り訂正器（ＦＥＣ）６０３、およびアップリンク・ユニット６０４を含んでいる。符号化器６０２は、ＭＰＥＧのような所定の標準に従って信号源６１４の信号を圧縮し符号化する。ここでＭＰＥＧとは、ディジタル蓄積メディアに蓄積された動画およびその関連オーディオの符号化法に関する国際標準化機構の動画専門家グループ（Ｍｏｖｉｎｇ Ｐｉｃｔｕｒｅ Ｅｘｐｅｒｔ Ｇｒｏｕｐ ｏｆ Ｉｎｔｅｒｎａｔｉｏｎａｌ Ｓｔａｎｄａｒｄｓ Ｏｒｇａｎｉｚａｔｉｏｎ）によって勧告された国際標準である。ユニット６０２の符号化信号は変調器／順方向誤り訂正器（ＦＥＣ、Ｆｏｒｗａｒｄ Ｅｒｒｏｒ Ｃｏｒｒｅｃｔｏｒ）６０３に供給され、その変調器／順方向誤り訂正器６０３が、誤り訂正データを付加してその信号を符号化し、その符号化信号でキャリア（搬送波）を１／４位相シフトキーまたは４相位相偏移（ＱＰＳＫ、Ｑｕａｔｅｒｎａｒｙ Ｐｈａｓｅ Ｓｈｉｆｔ Ｋｅｙ）変調する。畳込みおよびリード−ソロモン（ＲＳ）ブロック符号化の両方がブロック６０３で行われる。
アップリンク・ユニット６０４は圧縮され符号化された信号を衛星６１３に送信し、衛星６１３はその信号を選択された地理上の受信地域に対して放送する。この実施態様においては、衛星６１３は２つのモードで動作し、送信出力電力を減らしてチャンネル容量を増やし、またはチャンネル容量を減らして送信出力電力を増やす。例えば、第１のモードでは、衛星６１３は１６チャンネル分を各々１２０ワットで送信する。また、第２のモードでは、衛星６１３は８チャンネル分を各々２４０ワットで送信する。
衛星６１３の信号は、いわゆるセット・トップ型の受信機６１２（即ち、テレビジョン受像機の上に設置されるインタフェース装置）の入力に結合されているアンテナ・ディッシュ６０５によって受信される。受信機６１２は、信号を復調し誤り訂正データを復号するための復調器／順方向誤り訂正（ＦＥＣ）復号器６０７、復調器／ＦＥＣユニット６０７とインタラクティブに（ｉｎｔｅｒａｃｔｉｖｅｌｙ）動作するマイクロプロセッサ６０６、および信号の内容、即ちオーディオまたはビデオ情報に応じて復号器ユニット６０９内の適当な復号器に対してその信号をトランスポート（転送）するトランスポート・ユニット６０８を含んでいる。トランスポート・ユニット６０８は、ユニット６０７から訂正されたデータ・パケットを受入れ、各パケットのヘッダをチェックしてそのパケットのルートを決定する。ユニット６０９内の復号器は、その信号を復号し、付加されたトランスポート・データが使用されている場合はその付加されたトランスポート・データを取除く。ＮＴＳＣ符号化器６１０は、復号された信号を標準ＮＴＳＣ型の一般消費者用テレビジョン受像機６１１内の信号処理回路で処理するのに適したフォーマットに符号化する。
図７は、屋外のアンテナ・ディッシュ・ユニット７０５を含むＩＲＤ（Ｉｎｔｅｇｒａｔｅｄ Ｒｅｃｅｉｖｅｒ Ｄｅｃｏｄｅｒ：統合された受信機復号器）受信機システムの各構成部分（コンポーネント）を示すブロック図である。そのＩＲＤは、種々のテレビジョン信号に同調するための同調器７３４および復調器ユニット７３５を含んでいるブロック７０７を具えている。マイクロ制御器またはマイクロコントローラ７０６は、そのＩＲＤを制御するとともに、電話用モデム７２４を介してＩＲＤと電話回線網との間のインタフェースを制御し、ＩＲリンク（ＩＲインタフェース）７２５を介してＩＲＤとユーザとの間のインタフェースを制御し、ＭＰＥＧ復号器７２３、ビデオ符号化器７２１およびＲＦ（無線周波数）変調器７２２を介してＩＲＤとテレビジョン受像機との間のインタフェースを制御し、またスマート・カード・インタフェース（読取り器）およびトランスポートＩＣ７０８を介してＩＲＤユニットとユーザとの間のインタフェースを制御する。
次に、図８を参照すると、復調器／ＦＥＣユニット８０７は、アンテナ・ディッシュ８０５から受入れたデータ信号を捕捉し、復調し、復号する。この復調器／ＦＥＣユニット８０７は、図示のように構成され、また全て通常通りに設計された、同調器８３４、１／４位相シフトキー（ＱＰＳＫ）復調器８３５、ビタビ（Ｖｉｔｅｒｂｉ）畳込み復号器８３６、デ・インタリーブ器またはデ・インタリーバ（ｄｅ−ｉｎｔｅｒｌｅａｖｅｒ）８３７およびリード−ソロモン（ＲＳ）復号器８３８を含んでいる。
同調器８３４は、アンテナ・ディッシュ８０５から入力信号を受入れる。制御ユニット８０６（即ちマイクロプロセッサ）は、ユーザのチャンネル選択に従って周波数信号を同調器８３４に送る。この信号によって、同調器８３４が、適当なチャンネルに同調し、マイクロプロセッサ８０６から同調器８３４に送られた同調周波数信号に応じて受信信号の周波数をダウンコンバート（ｄｏｗｎｃｏｎｖｅｒｔ）する。同調器８３４の出力信号はＱＰＳＫ復調器８３５に供給される。
ＱＰＳＫ復調器８３５は、同調チャンネルにロック（同期）し、変調データ信号を復調し、その復調信号の品質を示す信号を生成する。復調器８３５は、受信データ信号の誤り訂正コードのレート（率）に関係なく、変調入力データ信号を復調する。復調器８３５内の位相ロックループ（ＰＬＬ）回路は、復調器８３５の動作を周知の技術を用いてその入力信号に同期させる。復調器８３５は、復調器８３５がその入力信号に同期しているか否かを示す復調器ロック出力制御信号ＤＥＭＯＤＵＬＡＴＯＲ ＬＯＣＫを発生し、この信号をマイクロプロセッサ８０６内の記憶レジスタに供給する。復調器ユニット８３５の出力復調データ信号はビタビ復号器８３６に供給される。また、復調器８３５は、出力信号品質信号ＳＩＧＮＡＬ ＱＵＡＬＩＴＹを発生する。この出力信号品質信号は、衛星の送信部から受信された信号の品質を示し、かつ受信信号の信号対ノイズ比（Ｓ／Ｎ比）に関係する信号である。種々のノイズ源および降雨フェージングによって、その受信信号の品質が低下する。ユニット８３５として用いるのに適したＱＰＳＫ復調器は、米国、メリーランド州、ジャーマンタウン（Ｇｅｒｍａｎｔｏｗｎ）のヒューズ・ネットワーク・システムズ社（Ｈｕｇｈｅｓ Ｎｅｔｗｏｒｋ Ｓｙｓｔｅｍｓ）（集積回路型式Ｎｏ．１０１６２１２）、およびカルフォルニア州、サンディエゴ（Ｓａｎ Ｄｉｅｇｏ）のコムストリーム社（Ｃｏｍｓｔｒｅａｍ Ｃｏｒｐ．）（Ｎｏ．ＣＤ２０００）より市販されている。
復号器８３６は、ビタビ・アルゴリズムを用いてユニット８３５の復調信号を復号し、その復調信号中のビット誤りを訂正する。復号器８３６は、復調信号を効率的に復号するために入来復調信号に復号器８３６の動作を同期させる公知の内部回路網を含んでいる。
復号器８３６が復調データ信号を復号しその誤りを訂正した後に、その復号データ信号はデ・インタリーブ器８３７に供給される。デ・インタリーブ器８３７は、データ信号を元のシーケンス（順序）の配列に戻して、公知の技術に従ってリード−ソロモン・ブロック（ＲＳブロック）を形成する。そのためにデ・インタリーブ器８３７は、符号化器によって各ＲＳブロックの開始点（先頭）に挿入された８ビット同期ワードに基づいてＲＳブロック同期を行う。デ・インタリーブ(ｄｅ−ｉｎｔｅｒｌｅａｖｅ) された信号はリード−ソロモン（Ｒｅｅｄ‐Ｓｏｌｏｍｏｎ）復号器８３８に供給される。
ＲＳ復号器８３８は、ＲＳブロックを復号し、ブロック内のバイト誤りを訂正する。ビタビ復号器８３６の復号信号は、デ・インタリーブ器８３７を介してＲＳ復号器８３８に供給される。ビタビ復号器８３６が適正な誤り訂正復号レートでデータ信号を復号する限りは、デ・インタリーブ器８３７およびリード−ソロモン復号器８３８が正常に動作する。
以上、仮想チャンネルを選択して所望のテレビジョン番組への同調を行うだけのユーザに対しては完全に透明な形で、テレビジョン番組を、トランスポンダに割当て、かつ或るトランスポンダのデータストリーム中の時分割多重スロットに割当てるディジタル多チャンネル送信システムについて記載し、説明した。以上説明したように、このシステムを円滑に動作させるには、トランスポンダのデータストリーム中のトランスポンダ・チャンネルおよび番組データ位置を仮想チャンネル番号に関係付けるマスタ・チャンネル・ガイドおよび特別チャンネル・ガイドを送信することが重要である。

Claims (1)

  1. ディジタル的に符号化された複数のテレビジョン番組を受信するためのテレビジョン・システムであって、
    制御信号に応答して、複数のディジタル・データ伝送チャンネルから、ある特定のディジタル・データ伝送チャンネルにおける前記ディジタル的に符号化されたテレビジョン番組のうちの所望の１つを選択する選択手段であって、前記データ伝送チャンネルは全て前記データ伝送チャンネルの全てのものについてテレビジョン番組スケジュール・データを含んでおり、該テレビジョン番組スケジュール・データは前記複数のテレビジョン番組の各々を前記複数のディジタル・データ伝送チャンネルの各々に関連づける、前記選択手段と、
    データを入力するための、ユーザが操作できるデータ入力手段と、
    前記選択手段と前記データ入力手段に結合され、ユーザが入力する前記データに応答して前記制御信号を発生する制御手段とから成り、
    前記制御手段は、ユーザが入力する前記データに応答して、複数の仮想チャンネルからの１つの仮想チャンネルにおける前記ディジタル的に符号化されたテレビジョン番組の所望の１つを選択し、各仮想チャンネルは前記複数のディジタル・データ伝送チャンネルのうちの異なる１つのチャンネルに再び割り当てられ、
    前記各テレビジョン番組のテレビジョン信号は圧縮された形で伝送され、前記テレビジョン・システムが、前記テレビジョン番組の信号を表示用に復元する手段を含む、前記テレビジョン・システム。
