ウェブへのアクセスはパーソナル・コンピュータを使いこなせる人々に限られている。それでも比較的安価なパーソナル・コンピュータを購入する余裕がない人々や、ウェブにアクセスするのに必要な基本的なコンピュータ操作を学ぶことができないかその気力がない人々がいる。さらに、通常、従来の技術におけるウェブ・ブラウザはコンピュータの経験がない人々が求めるユーザ・フレンドリな環境を整備するまでに至っていない。また、コンピュータの初心者の多くはソフトウェアの使い方を学ぶ気がない。例えば、インタフェースでハイパーテキスト・オブジェクトを識別してポイント&クリック方式でウェブ・ページをブラウズする必要のあるインタフェースを嫌う人々がいる。
しかし、多くの人々はテレビのリモコン装置を苦もなく使いこなしている。したがって、パーソナル・コンピュータを使わずにワールドワイド・ウェブにアクセスできることが望ましい。特に、一般のテレビとリモコン装置を使用してウェブ・ページにアクセスしてナビゲートすることができることが望ましい。さらに、リモコン装置を使ってウェブ・ページのハイパーテキスト・オブジェクトを最も努力がいらず頭も使わない方法でナビゲートし、複雑なコンピュータ・ネットワークを利用するのではなく、あたかもテレビのチャネルを変えるように楽々と操作ができるユーザ・インタフェースが望ましい。
ユーザ・インタフェースの欠点に加えて、通常、ウェブのブラウズに伴うもう1つの問題は、通信時の待ち時間である。人々はウェブをブラウズする際に、アクセスの遅さにいらだつ場合が多い。待ち時間の原因には、インターネットでの通信トラヒックの負荷、リモート・サーバの応答の遅さ、または多数の画像/音声ファイルの処理の場合などに大容量ファイルをダウンロードする必要性といったものがありうる。したがって、そのような待ち時間を削減してウェブでのブラウズに一般的に伴ういらだちの一部を解決する手段が必要である。
一般のコンピュータ・ユーザが直面する別の問題は、ソフトウェア・アプリケーションがすぐに時代遅れになるということである。したがって、ソフトウェア製造元は定期的にアップグレード版を提供し、それらはたいていオリジナルのソフトウェアの配布方法と同じ方法、すなわち磁気ディスクや光ディスクやその他の同様の記憶装置の形態で配布される。ただし、ソフトウェア・アップグレード版をこれらの記憶媒体で配布することには不利な点がある。例えば、ユーザが繰り返しソフトウェア・アップグレード版をインストールしなければならないというのは、時間がかかって不便であり、時には悩みの種となる。さらに、ユーザはアップグレート版が出ているのかまたはそれが必要なのかを知ることができない場合がある。また、アップグレード版を入手したりインストールすることを忘れる場合もある。アップグレード版はソフトウェアに重要な新機能を盛り込んだり、ソフトウェアのバグ(エラー)を修復するため、これをインストールしなかったりインストールするのが遅れると、有害な結果が生じることがある。したがって、ソフトウェア・アップグレード版をネットワーク上で自動的に配布し、ユーザの一部が苦もなくこれを入手できる技法が必要になってくる。本発明はそれを実現しようとするものである。
ネットワーク上でサーバ処理システムに結合され、これと通信するためにクライアント処理システムに記憶された情報をアップグレードする方法を提供する。サーバ処理システムからネットワーク上で送信される情報はネットワークからダウンロードされる。ダウンロードされた情報はクライアント処理システムのフラッシュ・メモリに書き込まれてこのメモリに保存されている既存情報をアップグレードする。
本発明の別の態様は、クライアント処理システムがワールドワイド・ウェブ(WWW)にアクセスする際の待ち時間を軽減する方法である。クライアント処理システムはサーバ処理システムに結合され、プロセッサと読み取り専用メモリ(ROM)を含む。クライアント処理システムはコンピュータのプログラム命令でプログラミングされ、処理システムのユーザはワールドワイド・ウェブ(WWW)をブラウズすることができる。この方法では、少なくとも1つのウェブ・リソースに対応する第1のデータ・セットがクライアント処理システムのROMに記憶される。クライアント処理システムからのウェブ・リソースへのアクセス要求に応答して、第1のデータ・セットにあるデータを除き、そのウェブ・リソースに対応するデータがクライアント処理システムに提供される。
本発明のさらに別の態様は、プロセッサと、マスクROMと、フラッシュ・メモリを含むメモリを処理システム内に割り当てる方法である。さらに処理システムは、システム専用のメモリ・リソースの割当てを指定するメモリ・マップを備えている。この方法では、メモリ・マップの第1のメモリ・スペースはマスクROMに割り当てられる。メモリ・マップの第2のメモリ・スペースは、メモリ・マップの中で第1のメモリ・スペースと隣り合わせになるようにフラッシュ・メモリに割り当てられる。
本発明のさらに別の態様は、ネットワーク経由で第2の処理システムに結合する機能を備えた処理システムである。この処理システムは第2の処理システムから送信された情報を第1の処理システムにダウンロードする手段を含む。この情報は複数のサブセットとして表される。この処理システムはさらに、情報を記憶するメモリ手段と、ダウンロード処理での割り込みを検出する割り込み検出手段と、割り込みに続けて規定の時間間隔にわたって処理システムの動作を持続する持続手段を含む。この処理システムはさらに、情報をメモリ手段に書き込む記憶手段を含む。この記憶手段によって進行表示がメモリ手段に記憶される。進行表示は情報のどのサブセットがこれまでにメモリ手段に書き込まれたかを識別する。この記憶手段によって、ダウンロード時に検出手段によって割り込みが検出されなかった場合に限り、あるサブセットがメモリ手段に書き込まれた後で次のサブセットの1つをメモリ手段に書き込むことができる。

ネットワーク上でソフトウェアを遠隔操作でアップグレードする方法と装置を記述する。以下の記述では、説明の目的から、多数の特定の詳細内容を述べ、本発明が十分に理解できるようにしている。しかし、本発明がこれらの特定の詳細内容なしでも実施できるということは当業者には明らかである。また場合によっては周知の構造と装置をブロック図で示して説明を容易にしている。
一実施形態において、本発明によるステップがマシンで実行可能なソフトウェア命令に実施され、本発明は以下に詳述するようにその命令を実行するプロセッサによる処理システムにおいて実現される。他の実施形態において、ソフトウェア命令の代わりに、またはそれと併用して、配線済みの回路を使用して本発明を実現することもできる。
本実施形態はセットトップ・ボックスがインターネット経由でテレビと1つまたは複数のサーバに接続されているシステムに関する。セットトップ・ボックスは、ブラウザ・ソフトウェアを実行してユーザがリモート制御装置を使ってテレビに表示されるワールドワイド・ウェブ(WWW)のページをブラウズすることを可能にする処理システムを含む。以下に述べるように、ネットワーク上でサーバから送信された上書き用ソフトウェアまたはデータをセットトップ・ボックスにダウンロードし、上書き用ソフトウェアまたはデータをセットトップ・ボックス内の不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリに書き込むことによって、ブラウザをアップグレードするかまたは再構成する。
一実施形態は、WebTVTM(WebTV)として知られるシステムに含まれる。このシステムは、標準のTVセットをウェブをブラウズする表示装置として使い、標準の電話機、またはISDN、または同様の通信回線を使ってインターネットなどの既存のネットワークに接続する。本実施形態によれば、WebTVクライアント・システムのユーザは1つまたは複数のリモートWebTVサーバが提供するWebTVネットワーク・サービスを利用できる。WebTVネットワーク・サービスは、WebTVクライアント・システムで実行されているソフトウェアと併用して、ウェブのブラウズと、Eメールの送信と、他のさまざまな方法でインターネットを利用するのに用いられる。WebTVサーバは、WebTVクライアント・システムが要求するウェブ・ページまたはその他のデータをリモート・サーバから検索し、要求された情報をWebTVクライアント・システムに送信することによって、プロキシ・サーバとして機能する。
I.システム概要
図1に一実施形態におけるWebTVネットワークの構成を示す。いくつかのWebTVクライアント1がモデム・プール2にダイレクトダイヤルの双方向データ接続29経由で接続されている。この接続は電話(POTS、すなわち「普通の電話サービス」)、またはISDN(ディジタル総合サービス・ネットワーク)、または同様の任意の接続である。通常モデム・プール2は当業界で従来知られているルータによって、インターネットなどの既存のネットワーク・インフラストラクチャ3経由でいくつかのリモート・サービス4に結合される。WebTVシステムはまた、WebTVクライアント1を専用にサポートするWebTVサーバ5を含む。すなわち、サーバ5はWebTVクライアント1にWebTVサービスを提供する。クライアント1はそれぞれダイレクト電話接続もしくはISDN接続により、またはモデム・プール2経由でインターネット3によりサーバ5に接続できる。モデム・プール2は、今日インターネットおよびプライベート・ネットワークへアクセスできる世界中でみられる従来のモデム・プールであることに留意されたい。モデム・プール2はローカルのインターネット・サービス・プロバイダ(ISP)から提供されたものでもよい。

A.サーバ・システムのアーキテクチャ
WebTVサーバ5は通常、図2に示すアーキテクチャを一般に備えた1つまたは複数のコンピュータ・システムを含む。図示のアーキテクチャは一例に過ぎないことに留意すべきである。WebTVサーバは図示のアーキテクチャに限定されない。図示のアーキテクチャは、中央処理装置(CPU)50と、ランダム・アクセス・メモリ(RAM)51と、読み取り専用メモリ(ROM)52と、大容量記憶装置53と、モデム54と、ネットワーク・インタフェース・カード(NIC)55と、他の各種入出力(I/O)装置56を含む。大容量記憶装置53は磁気または光またはその他の同等の記憶装置を含む。入出力装置56はディスプレイ・モニタ、キーボード、カーソル制御装置等のすべての装置を含む。モデム54を使ってインターネット経由でリモート・サーバ4との通信を行うことができる。
WebTVサーバ5は通常、図2に示すアーキテクチャを一般に備えた1つまたは複数のコンピュータ・システムを含む。図示のアーキテクチャは一例に過ぎないことに留意すべきである。WebTVサーバは図示のアーキテクチャに限定されない。図示のアーキテクチャは、中央処理装置(CPU)50と、ランダム・アクセス・メモリ(RAM)51と、読み取り専用メモリ(ROM)52と、大容量記憶装置53と、モデム54と、ネットワーク・インタフェース・カード(NIC)55と、他の各種入出力(I/O)装置56を含む。大容量記憶装置53は磁気または光またはその他の同等の記憶装置を含む。入出力装置56はディスプレイ・モニタ、キーボード、カーソル制御装置等のすべての装置を含む。モデム54を使ってインターネット経由でリモート・サーバ4との通信を行うことができる。
上述したように、サーバ5は実際には分散アーキテクチャ内に接続された複数の物理装置と論理装置を含むことができる。したがって、NIC55を使って、WebTVサービスの一部である他の装置とのデータ通信を行うことができる。また、モデム54を使って、WebTVサービスの一部で図示の装置から地理的に離れた、他の装置とのデータ通信を行うことができる。
B.クライアント・システム・アーキテクチャ
図3に一実施形態におけるWebTVクライアント・システム1を示す。クライアント・システム1は電子ユニット10(以下、「WebTVボックス10」または「ボックス10」)と、通常のTVセット12と、ハンドヘルド・リモート・コントロール装置11を含む。本発明の別の実施形態において、WebTVボックス10は必須ユニットとしてTVセット12に組み込まれている。ボックス10はユーザにグラフィカル・ユーザ・インタフェースを提供するハードウェアとソフトウェアを含む。ユーザは、このインタフェースを使ってWebTVネットワーク・サービスにアクセスし、ウェブをブラウズし、Eメールを送信し、他の方法でインターネットにアクセスすることができる。
図3に一実施形態におけるWebTVクライアント・システム1を示す。クライアント・システム1は電子ユニット10(以下、「WebTVボックス10」または「ボックス10」)と、通常のTVセット12と、ハンドヘルド・リモート・コントロール装置11を含む。本発明の別の実施形態において、WebTVボックス10は必須ユニットとしてTVセット12に組み込まれている。ボックス10はユーザにグラフィカル・ユーザ・インタフェースを提供するハードウェアとソフトウェアを含む。ユーザは、このインタフェースを使ってWebTVネットワーク・サービスにアクセスし、ウェブをブラウズし、Eメールを送信し、他の方法でインターネットにアクセスすることができる。
WebTVクライアント・システム1はTVセット12をディスプレイ装置とオーディオ出力装置として使用する。ボックス10はリンク6でTVセット12に結合される。リンク6はテレビのスピーカから音を再生するオーディオ・チャネルと、RF(無線周波数)、またはSビデオ、またはコンポジット・ビデオ形式、またはその他のフォーマットのビデオ・チャネルを含む。ボックス10とサーバ5を結ぶ通信リンク29は電話(POTS)接続29aまたはISDN接続29bのどちらかである。ボックス10はAC電源線7によってAC(交流)を供給される。
ユーザはリモート・コントロール装置11を操作して、クライアント・システム1を制御してウェブをブラウズし、Eメールを送信し、その他のインターネット関連の機能を実行する。ボックス10は赤外線(IR)通信リンク経由でリモート・コントロール装置11からコマンドを受信する。別の実施形態において、リモート・コントロール装置11とボックス10を結ぶリンクはRFまたは同等の通信モードで提供される。
ボックス10はアプリケーション・ソフトウェアを含む。そのソフトウェアはボックス10内のプロセッサの実行時に、ユーザがWebTVネットワーク・サービスにアクセスしてウェブをブラウズできるグラフィカル・ユーザ・インタフェースをユーザに提供する。アプリケーション・ソフトウェアはボックス10に電源が投入されると自動的に実行される。
図4にWebTVボックス10の内蔵コンポーネントを示す。クライアント・システム1の動作は、専用IC(ASIC)20に結合されるCPU21で制御される。CPU21は、本発明の各種機能を実現するように設計されたソフトウェアを実行する。ASIC20は、WebTVシステムの一定の機能を実現するために用いる回路を含む。ASIC20はオーディオ出力をテレビ12に供給するオーディオD−Aコンバータ25に結合される。さらに、ASIC20はビデオ出力をTVセット12に供給するビデオ・エンコーダ26に結合される。IRインタフェース24はリモート・コントロール装置11から送信されるIR信号を検出し、その応答として該当する電気信号をASIC20へ送信する。標準電話モデム27とISDNモデム30はASIC20に結合され、モデム・プール2に前者は29a、後者は29bに接続し、インターネット3経由でリモート・サーバ4に接続する。図示の実施形態は電話モデム27とISDNモデム30を両方含むが、本実施形態を実施するにはいずれか一方で十分であることに留意されたい。さらに、別のさまざまな実施形態において、電話モデム27とISDNモデム30はそれぞれケーブルTVモデムなどの他の通信機器で代用したり、これと併用したりすることができる。さらに、別の実施形態において、トークン・リングまたはイーサネット接続経由でサーバ5と通信ができる。ボックス10はケーブルTVモデム(図示されていない)を含むこともできることに留意されたい。
ASIC20にはさらにマスク読み取り専用メモリ(ROM)22aと、フラッシュ・メモリ22bと、ランダム・アクセス・メモリ(RAM)23が結合される。マスクROM22a(非プログラマブル・メモリであるためこの呼称がある)は、後述するように、一定のプログラム命令とデータの記憶装置である。フラッシュ・メモリ22bは電子的な書込み(プログラミング)と消去が可能な従来のフラッシュ・メモリ装置である。フラッシュ・メモリ22bはデータと共にブラウザ・ソフトウェアの記憶装置である。一実施形態において、大容量記憶装置28がWebTVボックスに含まれ、ASIC20に結合される。大容量記憶装置28を使ってクライアントにソフトウェアまたはデータを入力したり、ネットワーク接続29経由で受信したデータのソフトウェアをダウンロードすることができる。大容量記憶装置28は、マシンが実行可能な命令を記憶するのに適した媒体、例えば磁気ディスクや光ディスクなどを含む。
上述したように、WebTVボックス10はウェブ・ブラウザなどのアプリケーション・ソフトウェアを含む。図5によれば、上述のアプリケーション・ソフトウェア31はオペレーティング・システム(OS)ソフトウェア32と連携して動作する。OSソフトウェア32は各種デバイス・ドライバを含み、他の方法でアプリケーション・ソフトウェア31とシステム・ハードウェア・コンポーネント40(すなわち図4に示す構成要素)を結ぶインターネットを提供する。
一実施形態において、アプリケーション・ソフトウェア31とOSソフトウェア32はフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶される。ただし、さまざまな実施形態において、アプリケーション・ソフトウェア31とOSソフトウェア32の一方または両方の一部または全部が、マスクROM22aまたは大容量記憶装置28のような他のあらゆる適した記憶媒体にも記憶できることに留意されたい。
上述したように、一実施形態における各ステップはマシンが実行可能な命令で実現される。例えば、一実施形態において、マスクROM22a、またはフラッシュ・メモリ22b、またはRAM23、またはこれらの装置の組み合わせに含まれる命令シーケンスを実行するCPU21によってWebTVボックス10内で本発明が実施される。より詳細に言えば、命令シーケンスの実行によってCPU21は本実施形態の各ステップを実行する。これらのステップを以下に記述する。本実施形態を実施するための命令は、大容量記憶装置28などの永続的記憶装置から、またはWebTVサーバ5もしくはリモート・サーバ4などの1つもしくは複数の他のコンピュータ・システムからネットワーク経由で、またはこの両方から遠隔操作でロードすることができる。例えば、その種のサーバ・システムはクライアント・システム1からインターネット3経由でサーバ・システムに送信されるメッセージに応答して命令シーケンスをクライアント・システム1に送信できる。モデム27aのようにクライアント・システム1がネットワーク接続経由で命令を受けると、そのクライアント・システム1はメモリに命令を記憶する。クライアント・システム1は命令を記憶して後に実行してもよく、またネットワーク接続経由で受けた時点で即時に命令を実行してもよい。
いくつかの実施形態において、ダウンロードされた命令は直接CPU21によってサポートされる。したがって、命令は直接CPU21によって実行される。別の実施形態においては、命令がCPU21によって直接実行されない場合がある。この場合、CPU21に命令をインタプリトするインタプリタを実行させるか、受信した命令をCPU21が直接実行できる命令に変換する命令を実行させるかして、命令を実行することができる。
本発明のある実施形態と態様は、WebTVクライアント・システム1によって実行される代わりに(またはこれと併用して)WebTVサーバ5によって実行することができる。例えば、WebTVサーバ5のCPU50はメモリに記憶された命令を実行して本実施形態に従って各ステップを実施することができる。
多様な実施形態において、配線済みの回路をソフトウェア命令の代わりに、またはこれと併用して使用し、本実施形態を実現できる。このように、本実施形態はハードウェア回路とソフトウェアのいかなる特定の組み合わせにも限定されず、コンピュータ・システムが実行する命令のいかなる特定のソースにも限定されない。
II.リモート・ダウンロード
上述したように、ブラウザ・ソフトウェアは、サーバからインターネット経由で、または直接の電話接続によって受信した上書き用ソフトウェアもしくはデータをボックスにダウンロードすることによってアップグレードまたは再構成できる。フラッシュ・メモリ22bは本来プログラマブル・メモリであって、プログラミングされた情報を電源が切れても保持できることから、この種のアップグレードまたは再構成に威力を発揮する。以下に詳述するように、WebTVサーバ5(またはWebTVサーバ5が指定した他のサーバ)から送信された上書き用ソフトウェアまたはデータは、WebTVボックス10のフラッシュ・メモリ22bに自動的に書き込まれる。さらに、フラッシュ・メモリを使って、Javaアプレット(プログラム)などのウェブからダウンロードされる各種リソースを記憶し、クライアント・システム1への電源が供給されなくなってもそのリソースを保持することができる。本実施形態は、必ずしもこれらの目的にフラッシュ・メモリの使用を必要とするわけではない。電気的消去可能PROM(EEPROM)などの他の形式の不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリも使用できる。
上述したように、ブラウザ・ソフトウェアは、サーバからインターネット経由で、または直接の電話接続によって受信した上書き用ソフトウェアもしくはデータをボックスにダウンロードすることによってアップグレードまたは再構成できる。フラッシュ・メモリ22bは本来プログラマブル・メモリであって、プログラミングされた情報を電源が切れても保持できることから、この種のアップグレードまたは再構成に威力を発揮する。以下に詳述するように、WebTVサーバ5(またはWebTVサーバ5が指定した他のサーバ)から送信された上書き用ソフトウェアまたはデータは、WebTVボックス10のフラッシュ・メモリ22bに自動的に書き込まれる。さらに、フラッシュ・メモリを使って、Javaアプレット(プログラム)などのウェブからダウンロードされる各種リソースを記憶し、クライアント・システム1への電源が供給されなくなってもそのリソースを保持することができる。本実施形態は、必ずしもこれらの目的にフラッシュ・メモリの使用を必要とするわけではない。電気的消去可能PROM(EEPROM)などの他の形式の不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリも使用できる。
一実施形態において、WebTVシステムのブラウザ・ソフトウェアはフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶され、ソフトウェアの再構成を行う。ソフトウェアがブラウザ環境を生成するのに使用するデータは通常マスクROM22aに記憶される。このデータは、フォント、画像、音声、サーバ5またはモデム・プール2へ接続するための電話番号などのさまざまな構成パラメータ、およびWebTVサーバ5、モデム・プール2または他のサーバとの通信を確立するために使用される接続スクリプトを含む。
マスクROM22aのデータ項目はフラッシュ・メモリ22bに代替(「上書き」)データ項目を記憶することによって上書きする(書き替える)ことができる。このように、特定のデータ項目がフラッシュ・メモリ22bにある場合、クライアント・システム1はマスクROM22aの対応データ項目を無視する。以上のように、フラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶されたコンピュータ・プログラム命令と、フラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶されたデータの両方または一方を追加または置き換えることによってブラウザをアップグレードまたは再構成できる。
あるタイプのフラッシュ・メモリは少数のいわゆる「ブート・ブロック」で製造される。ブート・ブロックのサイズは通常、メモリ内部の標準ブロックのサイズより小さい。例えば、ある特定のタイプのフラッシュ・メモリの場合、メモリの標準ブロック1個のサイズは64Kバイトであるのに対して、代表的なブート・ブロックのサイズは8Kバイトである。したがって、一実施形態において、ある種の上書きデータその他のデータは、フラッシュ・メモリ22bのブート・ブロックに記憶されている。この技法によってフラッシュ・メモリの単一のブロックが十分に使用できない場合にメモリ・スペースが大幅に浪費されるのを防止できる。
WebTVクライアント・システム1をアップグレードする目的、またはクライアント・システム1を再構成して不一致状態(例えば、プログラム命令またはデータのエラー)を修復する目的で、インターネット3からのダウンロードが可能である。WebTVクライアント・システム1は、クライアント・システム1がリセットされるたびにネットワークからのダウンロードを実行するかどうかを決定する。より詳細に言えば、リセット時にクライアント・システム1がエラー状態を検出するか、アップグレードの場合にクライアント・システム1がメモリ内にダウンロード要求を検出した時にはダウンロードが実行される。このことから、図6は一実施形態において、WebTVクライアント・システム1が実行するリセット・ルーチンを示している。
図6のリセット・ルーチンは、動作中にクライアント・システム1がリセットされるか、またはボックス10の電源が投入されるたびに実行される。一実施形態において、図6のルーチンはマスクROM22aに記憶された開始命令の実行によって起動される。ステップ601では、フラッシュ・メモリ22bの全内容(すなわちプログラム命令とデータ)の有効性が従来のチェックサム技法で検証される。この内容が有効な場合(ステップ602)、ステップ603で通常の開始ルーチンが実行される。フラッシュ・メモリ22bの内容が有効でない場合(すなわち、破壊されているかそれ以外の不一致状態を示す場合)、ステップ604でエラー・ダウンロード・ルーチンが実行される。エラー・ダウンロード・ルーチンでは、フラッシュ・メモリ内の破壊された情報の一部または全部がインターネット3からダウンロードされた正確な情報で上書きされる。エラー・ダウンロード・ルーチンは以下に詳述する。こうして、WebTVシステムによって、プログラミングまたはデータのエラーは、WebTVクライアント・システム1のユーザの操作を必要とせず、エラー・ダウンロード・ルーチンを実行することによって検出され自動的に修復される。
図7にウェブ・ブラウザのアップグレードの開始ルーチンを示す。通常の開始時には(すなわちリセット時にエラーが検出されなかった場合)、ステップ701でクライアント・システム1は自動的にWebTVサーバ5に接続する。通常、この接続は接続スクリプトを実行してモデム・プール2経由で実行される。ステップ702でアップグレードが使用可能と判定され、アップグレードがステップ703で必須に指定されている場合、ステップ704でサーバはクライアント・システム1へコマンドを送信し、ダウンロード要求をクライアント・システム1のフラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込む。次にステップ705でクライアント・システム1はWebTVサーバ5によって図6のルーチンに従ってリセットするよう指示を受ける。ステップ702でアップグレードが使用可能と判定され、アップグレードがステップ703で必須に指定されていない場合、ステップ706でクライアント・システム1はユーザに対してアップグレードを受け入れるか拒絶するか促す。ステップ707でアップグレードを受け入れた場合、ステップ705でクライアント・システム1は図6のルーチンに従ってリセットを行う。そうでない場合、ルーチンは終了する。
図8にアップグレードを開始する通常の開始ルーチン(すなわち図6のステップ603)の一部を示す。まず、ステップ801でクライアント・システム1はフラッシュ・メモリ22bにダウンロード要求があるかどうかを判定する。要求がない場合、ブラウザ・プログラムがステップ808で通常に開始する。フラッシュ・メモリ22bにダウンロード要求がある場合、ステップ802で接続スクリプトがフラッシュ・メモリ22bにあるかどうかが判定される。
上述したように、接続スクリプトが実行されてモデム・プール2またはWebTVサーバ5との通信が確立する。通常、ローカル接続スクリプトがフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶されていて、ローカル・モデム・プール2への接続が可能になる。デフォルトの接続スクリプトがマスクROM22aに記憶され、フリー・ダイヤルの電話番号(すなわち「1−800−」で始まる番号)を使って、WebTVサーバ5へ直接接続できる。デフォルトの接続スクリプトは通常、ローカル接続スクリプトがフラッシュ・メモリ22bにない場合に限って使用される。
また図8に示すように、ローカル接続スクリプトがフラッシュ・メモリ22bにある場合(ステップ802)、ステップ803でクライアント・システムはその接続ステップを使ってローカル・モデム・プール2経由でWebTVサーバ5へ接続する。上記の接続が確立した場合、ステップ804でアップグレードに使用するIP(インターネット・プロトコル)アドレスと、ポートと、パス情報がフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶されているかどうかが判定される。WebTVサーバ5などの、デフォルト・サーバ以外のサーバからアップグレードをダウンロードする場合、WebTVサーバ5は前記情報をクライアント・システム1に提供できる。この情報が提供された場合、ステップ805でクライアント・システム1は指定のサーバに接続し、ステップ806で指定ファイルを要求し、ステップ807でファイルのダウンロードを開始する。IPアドレスと、ポートと、パス情報がフラッシュ・メモリ22bにない場合、ステップ810でクライアント・システム1は、マスクROM22aに記憶されているデフォルトのIPアドレスと、ポートと、パス情報を使ってデフォルトのサーバに接続する。次にステップ811で記憶情報を使ってデフォルトのアップグレード・ファイルが要求される。ステップ811で、クライアント・システム1はまたデフォルトのサーバに対して実行中のソフトウェア・バージョンを表示して、デフォルトのサーバがそのクライアント・システムで使用する適切なデフォルトのファイルを決定できるようにする。クライアント・システムがファイルを要求した後で、ステップ807でデフォルトのファイルのダウンロードが開始する。上述したように、クライアント・システム1へのダウンロードはインターネット3経由、モデム・プール2経由で実行される。情報はダウンロードされると自動的に解凍され(ファイルが圧縮されている場合)、クライアント・システム1によってフラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込まれる。
以上のように、任意選択のアップグレードは自動化されており、クライアント・システム1のユーザはアップグレードを受け入れるかどうかの画面上のプロンプトに応答する以外、キー入力の必要がない。必須のアップグレードはユーザのキー入力なしに実行され、望むならユーザに対してアップグレードを通知せずに実行するよう設定することもできる。
図9に、リセット・ルーチン(図6)の間にエラーまたは他の不一致状態が検出された場合のような、クライアント・システムのプログラミングまたはデータのエラーを自動的に訂正できるルーチンを示す。こうした訂正処理はユーザのキー入力なしに自動的に実行され、望むならユーザに対してアップグレードを通知せずに実行するよう設定することもできる。まず、ステップ901で、クライアント・システム1はマスクROM22aに記憶されたデフォルトのフリー・ダイヤル番号を使って直接サーバ5に接続する。接続されると、クライアント・システム1はサーバ5からローカル接続スクリプトを入手する。次にクライアント・システム1はサーバ5から切り離され、ローカル接続スクリプトを使ってモデム・プール2経由でサーバ5に再接続される。さらにクライアント・システム1は

図10にダウンロードの詳細処理を示す。ダウンロードが開始すると、クライアント・システム1はステップ1001でブロック番号ごとのデータ・ブロック(実際にはコンピュータ・プログラム命令を含む場合がある)を要求する。ステップ1002で、クライアント・システム1はデータを送信するサーバから一定のブロック情報を受信する。この情報は、ダウンロードするブロックのサイズと、ダウンロードする次のブロックの識別と、現在のブロックの書込み先であるフラッシュ・メモリ22bのアドレスと、インターネット3経由で送信される前に適用するデータ圧縮の説明を含む。次にデータはインターネット3経由でクライアント・システム1へ送信される。ステップ1003で、クライアント・システム1はネットワーク接続29経由でデータを受信し、データをRAM23にロードする。データが圧縮されている場合、クライアント・システム1はステップ1004でデータを解凍する。ステップ1005で、クライアント・システムはステップ1002で受信したアドレスを使って、フラッシュ・メモリ22bにデータを書き込む。次のブロックの情報(ステップ1006)にしたがってダウンロードする別のブロックがある場合、このルーチンはステップ1001から繰り返される。そうでない場合、このルーチンは終了する。
III.ウェブ・リソースのキャッシング
ウェブのブラウズに伴う問題は通信時の待ち時間である。従来の技術によるシステムでは、例えば大容量のデータを必要とする画像またはオーディオ・データまたはその他のリソースをダウンロードする場合などに待ち時間が長くなるのが通例であった。本実施形態はこの種の待ち時間を削減する技法をも含む。
ウェブのブラウズに伴う問題は通信時の待ち時間である。従来の技術によるシステムでは、例えば大容量のデータを必要とする画像またはオーディオ・データまたはその他のリソースをダウンロードする場合などに待ち時間が長くなるのが通例であった。本実施形態はこの種の待ち時間を削減する技法をも含む。
ウェブ・リソースの一部はクライアント・システム1から繰り返して頻繁にアクセスされる。このリソースは例えばWebTVサービスと、WebTVロゴのホーム・ページと、ディスプレイで使用するフォーマット用グラフィックスを含む。したがって、本実施形態によれば、前述したようなリソースの一部はマスクROM22aとフラッシュ・メモリ22bの一方または両方にキャッシングされる。フラッシュ・メモリ22bにキャッシングされたリソースは、上記の方法でインターネットまたは電話の直接接続経由でサーバ5から追加または削除またはアップグレードされる。したがって、この種のリソースを含むウェブ・ページがクライアント・システム1から要求される場合、これらのリソースをインターネット3からダウンロードする必要はない。その代わり、これらのリソースはマスクROM22aまたはフラッシュ・メモリ22bから直接検索できる。この方法はネットワークからリソースをダウンロードするよりもはるかに時間がかからない。このキャッシングの結果、要求に応じてダウンロードする情報の全体量は減り、要求に対するダウンロードの総計時間は削減される。
サーバ5はクライアント・システム1にキャッシングされているウェブ・リソースを常時把握している。したがって、クライアント・システム1からサーバ5によって要求が受信されると、WebTVサーバが把握しているキャッシュ内容に照らして要求がチェックされる。クライアント・システムにキャッシングされているリソースはリモート・サーバ4からサーバ5によって検索されず、またクライアント・システム1へ送信もされない。
図11にクライアント・システム1からの要求に応じてWebTVサーバが実行するルーチンを示す。まず、ステップ1101でサーバ5はハイパーテキスト・オブジェクトを選択しているクライアント・システム1のユーザに応答してクライアント・システム1からUniform Resource Locator(URL)を受信する。次に、ステップ1102で、サーバ5は受信したURLとマスクROM22aまたはフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶されているキャッシュ・データとの対応をチェックする。ステップ1103で、サーバ5は要求されたウェブ・ページ(または他のデータ)を該当するリモート・サーバ4から入手する。次に、要求されたウェブ・ページ(または他のデータ)は、クライアント・システム1にキャッシングされているデータを除き、ステップ1104でクライアント・システム1にダウンロードされる。
IV.マスク・メモリとフラッシュ・メモリのスペースの隣接配置
クライアント・システム1はマスクROM22aとフラッシュ・メモリ22bを含むため、クライアント・システム1に有利な方法でこれらの2つの装置の間でメモリ使用量を割り当てることができる。特に、一般に、フラッシュ・メモリとマスクROMにはそれぞれ利点と欠点がある。例えば、フラッシュ・メモリはそのプログラミング機能のためにマスクROMより融通性が高い反面、マスクROMより高価になる傾向がある。したがって、本発明の一実施形態において、これらの特徴を利用してブラウザ・コードの一部(ソフトウェアとデータ)をマスクROM22aに、またブラウザ・コードの別の一部をフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶するという使い分けができる。より詳細に言えば、アップグレードまたは再構成の結果として変更されないようなコードの部分はマスクROM22aに記憶し、アップグレードまたは再構成の対象となると考えられるコードの一部はフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶される。この結果、一実施形態において、ブラウザ・コードの大部分(例えばコア機能を表すコード)がマスクROM22aに記憶され、必要なフラッシュ・メモリの量が比較的少なくなる。このメモリ割当ての方法は、低コストのマスクROMと、フラッシュ・メモリの融通性の両方を利用している。上記の方法を使っても、フラッシュ・メモリ22bにダウンロードすることによってインターネット上でブラウザを容易にアップグレードまたは再構成できる。
クライアント・システム1はマスクROM22aとフラッシュ・メモリ22bを含むため、クライアント・システム1に有利な方法でこれらの2つの装置の間でメモリ使用量を割り当てることができる。特に、一般に、フラッシュ・メモリとマスクROMにはそれぞれ利点と欠点がある。例えば、フラッシュ・メモリはそのプログラミング機能のためにマスクROMより融通性が高い反面、マスクROMより高価になる傾向がある。したがって、本発明の一実施形態において、これらの特徴を利用してブラウザ・コードの一部(ソフトウェアとデータ)をマスクROM22aに、またブラウザ・コードの別の一部をフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶するという使い分けができる。より詳細に言えば、アップグレードまたは再構成の結果として変更されないようなコードの部分はマスクROM22aに記憶し、アップグレードまたは再構成の対象となると考えられるコードの一部はフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記憶される。この結果、一実施形態において、ブラウザ・コードの大部分(例えばコア機能を表すコード)がマスクROM22aに記憶され、必要なフラッシュ・メモリの量が比較的少なくなる。このメモリ割当ての方法は、低コストのマスクROMと、フラッシュ・メモリの融通性の両方を利用している。上記の方法を使っても、フラッシュ・メモリ22bにダウンロードすることによってインターネット上でブラウザを容易にアップグレードまたは再構成できる。
マスクROM22aとフラッシュ・メモリ22bにWebTVクライアント・システムのメモリ・マップ内の隣接するメモリ・スペースを割り当てることによって効果的なメモリ・スペースの割当てが可能になる。図12に示すように、クライアント・システム1のメモリ・マップ60の隣接メモリ・スペース61と62をそれぞれフラッシュ・メモリ22bとマスクROM22aに割り当てることができる。さらに、ブラウザ・コードをメモリ・スペースの61と62の隣接サブセットに記憶でき、必要ならばブラウザ・コードがメモリ・マップ60内の単一の連続サブセット63を占めることができる。
V.電源断からの復旧
AC電源コードを不注意でコンセントから抜いた場合のように、システムの稼働中のある時点でWebTVボックス10へのAC電力が切断されることがある。本実施形態はそれに備えてダウンロード実行中の電源断に対処し、復旧するための技法を提供する。この復旧技法は、送信元サーバとの通信障害または通信中断にも適用できる。
AC電源コードを不注意でコンセントから抜いた場合のように、システムの稼働中のある時点でWebTVボックス10へのAC電力が切断されることがある。本実施形態はそれに備えてダウンロード実行中の電源断に対処し、復旧するための技法を提供する。この復旧技法は、送信元サーバとの通信障害または通信中断にも適用できる。
図4に示すコンポーネント以外に、WebTVボックス10は図13に示す電源15を含む。電源15は電源線7経由でAC電力の供給を受け、電源線7A経由でボックス10の各種コンポーネントへDC電力を出力する。本発明の一実施形態において、電源15はAC電源線7の電源断の場合に短時間(例えば1〜2秒)クライアント・システム1を稼働するのに充分なDC電力を確保する持続装置16を含む。より詳細に言えば、持続装置16はダウンロードされた1ブロックのデータをフラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込むのに必要な電力を保持する。この時間は使用するフラッシュ・メモリのタイプに応じて異なる。持続装置16はAC電源線7と電源のDC電源出力7Aの間に結合される。一実施形態において、持続装置16は従来のコンデンサで、その値は電力を保持する必要がある継続時間に基づいて選択される。ただし、持続装置16は前記の機能を実行するバッテリまたは他の任意の装置でもよい。
電源8はAC電源断を検知し、該当する信号であるPWR OKを出力して、AC電力の存否を示す機能がある。図4に示すように、信号PWR OKはASIC20に供給される。AC電源断の発生時に信号PWR OKはただちにステータスを変更して電源断を知らせる。信号PWR OKはクライアント・システム1が図14に示すルーチンを実行するための入力として使用される。すなわち、ステップ1401で電源断が検出されると、ステップ1402でクライアント・システム1にNO POWERフラグが設定されてこの事態を表示する。電源フラグのステータスは以下に記述するようにダウンロード処理中に繰り返しチェックされる。
図15に示すように、ダウンロードされたデータをフラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込む前にNO PWRフラグのステータスがステップ1501でチェックされる。NO PWRフラグが設定されていると(PWR OK信号の変化に応答して)、ルーチンは終了し、その後データ・ブロックは書き込まれない。NO PWRフラグが設定されていないと、ステップ1508で次のデータ・ブロックがフラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込まれる。フラッシュ・メモリ22bはフィールドNUM_BLOCKSを備え、フラッシュ・メモリ22bに現在までに書き込まれたブロック数を示す。このフィールドはステップ1503でアップグレードされる。ステップ1502でデータ・ブロックの書込み中に電源断が発生した場合、持続装置16によって現在のブロックの書込みが保証される。書き込み別のブロックがある場合(ステップ1504で)、ルーチンはNO PWRフラグのステータスをチェックしてステップ1501から繰り返す。そうでない場合、ルーチンは終了する。電力が復旧し、サーバ5への接続が再確立すると、ダウンロードを再開できる。書き込まれたブロックの数はフラッシュ・メモリ22bに記録されている(起動時にチェックサムで確認できる)ため、フラッシュ・メモリ22bに書き込まれていなかったデータ・ブロックだけをダウンロードする必要がある。同じ理由で、送信元サーバとの電話接続(または他の通信リンク)がダウンロード時に失われるか障害になった場合、接続が再確立されるとダウンロードを書込みが成功した最後のブロックから再開することができる。
以上、ネットワーク上でソフトウェアの遠隔操作でアップグレードを実行する方法と装置について記述してきた。具体的な実施形態を例にとって本発明について記述してきたが、請求項に記載する発明のより広い精神と範囲から外れることなく、さまざまな訂正と変更をこれらの実施例に加えることができるのは明らかである。したがって、仕様と図面は制限的意味ではなく例示的な意味で解釈する必要がある。

- ネットワーク経由でサーバ処理システムに結合され、これと通信するクライアント処理システムに記憶された情報をアップグレードする方法であって、
サーバ処理システムからネットワーク上で送信されるネットワーク情報をダウンロードするステップと、
ダウンロードした情報をクライアント処理システムの不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリに書き込んで、その不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリにすでに記憶されている情報をアップグレードするステップと
を含む方法。 - 前記サーバ処理システムからアップグレード実行要求を受信するステップと、
前記要求に応じてダウンロードのステップを自動的に実行するステップと
をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 前記サーバ処理システムとの通信セッションを確立するステップと、

前記不揮発性プログラマブル・メモリが前記処理システム内で前記不揮発性非プログラマブル・メモリに割り当てられたメモリ・スペースに隣接したメモリ・スペースを割り当てられることを特徴とする処理システム。 - ネットワーク上で他の処理システムに結合する機能がある処理システムであって、
他の処理システムから送信された、複数のサブセットを含む情報をダウンロードする手段と、
情報を記憶するメモリ手段と、
情報のダウンロード処理での割り込みを検出する検出手段と、
割り込みに続けて規定の時間間隔にわたって動作を持続する持続手段と、
情報をメモリ手段に書き込み、情報のどのサブセットがこれまでにメモリ手段に書き込まれたかを識別する進行表示をメモリ手段にさらに記憶し、
情報のダウンロード時に検出手段によって割り込みが検出されなかった場合に限り、あるサブセットがメモリ手段に書き込まれた後で次のサブセットの1つをメモリ手段にさらに書き込む記憶手段と
を含む処理システム。 - 割り込みの終了に続けて前記進行表示に基づいてメモリ手段へのダウンロード情報の書込みを再開する手段をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項13に記載の処理システム。
