Abstract
【解決手段】 電極を備え、88.5°〜89.5°のプレティルト角を備える第1及び第2基板と、両基板間に挟持され、電圧無印加時には両基板にほぼ垂直に配向し、電圧印加時には、160°以上240°以下のねじれ角でねじれ構造を形成する液晶分子材料を含む、厚さdの液晶層であって、カイラルピッチpのカイラル材を含み、d/pが0.2〜0.74である液晶層と、第1基板の液晶層とは反対側の面に向き合うように配置され、透過軸の方向が第1方向である第1偏光板と、第2基板の液晶層とは反対側の面に向き合うように配置され、かつ、第1及び第2基板の法線方向から見たとき、透過軸の方向が、第1方向と85°〜95°の角度をなす第2方向である第2偏光板と、第1基板と第1偏光板との間、第2基板と第2偏光板との間の少なくとも一方に、第1及び第2偏光板と面内方向が相互に略平行となるように配置された光学異方性板とを有する液晶表示素子を提供する。

Claims (7)
- 電極を備え、88.5°以上89.5°以下のプレティルト角を付与する配向処理の施された第1の基板と、
前記第1の基板と略平行に対向配置され、電極を備え、88.5°以上89.5°以下のプレティルト角を付与する配向処理の施された第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に挟持され、前記第1及び第2の基板に施された配向処理にしたがって、電圧無印加時には、前記第1及び第2の基板にほぼ垂直に配向し、電圧印加時には、160°以上240°以下のねじれ角でねじれ構造を形成する液晶分子材料を含む、厚さがdの液晶層であって、カイラルピッチがpのカイラル材を含んで構成され、d/pが0.2以上0.74以下である液晶層と、
前記第1の基板の前記液晶層とは反対側の面に向き合うように配置され、透過軸の方向が第1の方向である第1の偏光板と、
前記第2の基板の前記液晶層とは反対側の面に向き合うように配置され、かつ、前記第1及び第2の基板の法線方向から見たとき、透過軸の方向が、前記第1の方向と85°以上95°以下の角度をなす第2の方向である第2の偏光板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間の少なくとも一方に、前記第1及び第2の偏光板と面内方向が相互に略平行となるように配置された光学異方性板と
を有する液晶表示素子。 - 前記液晶分子材料の複屈折率をΔnとするとき、Δnと前記液晶層の厚さdとの積である、リタデーションΔn・dが580nm以上である請求項1に記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記光学異方性板は負の一軸光学異方性を有し、前記光学異方性板が、前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、または、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間のどちらか一方に配置される請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記光学異方性板が、遅相軸が相互に直交するように配置された2枚の正の一軸光学異方性板を含んで構成され、前記光学異方性板は、前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、または、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間のどちらか一方に配置される請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記光学異方性板は負の二軸光学異方性を有し、前記光学異方性板が、前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、または、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間のどちらか一方に配置される請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記光学異方性板が、正の一軸光学異方性を有する光学異方性板と、負の一軸光学異方性を有する光学異方性板とを含んで構成され、前記光学異方性板は、前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、または、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間のどちらか一方に配置される請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
- 前記光学異方性板が、負の二軸光学異方性を有する光学異方性板と、負の一軸光学異方性を有する光学異方性板とを含んで構成され、前記光学異方性板は、前記第1の基板と前記第1の偏光板との間、または、前記第2の基板と前記第2の偏光板との間のどちらか一方に配置される請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
