バックライト用蛍光ランプの外套管は、励起された水銀ガス等から放出される短波長紫外線によってガラスが変色すると、輝度の低下や発光色のずれが起こり、液晶表示素子の品質劣化につながる。

寸法精度が悪いと、蛍光体の均一な塗布ができず、輝度ムラが発生する。また蛍光ランプ、導光板、反射板で構成される光学系において、設計寸法通りにアッセンブリすることができない。その結果、バックライトユニットやフロントライトユニット自体の輝度低下や輝度ムラの原因となる。
ガラス中に泡があると、これが成形時に引き延ばされて長細い泡となる。管の内面側にこのような泡があり、かつ泡の一部が管内面に開口している場合、管の切断面がこのような細長い泡の上に来ると、管の切断面と管内面を連通する孔となり易い。管ガラスの加工時にもこの孔はふさがらない。このため、この孔を通じて外気が蛍光ランプ管内へスローリークする。その結果、管内で電子が飛ばなくなって蛍光ランプが光を出さなくなる現象が発生する。しかも近年の細管化によってガラス肉厚が薄くなり、泡があると管内面に泡が開く可能性が増大している。このため細管では、従来ガラス以上の泡品位が要求される。
通常、電極(導入金属)を封着する封着ビーズは外套管と同材質のガラスで作製される。従って外套管は、電極材料であるコバール(熱膨張係数58×10-7/℃)、モリブデン(熱膨張係52×10-7/℃)、タングステン(熱膨張係数45×10-7/℃)等の熱膨張係数と適合する熱膨張係数を有する必要がある。

含有するガラスが挙げられる。
着色度は、次のようにして評価した。まず管ガラス試料(長さ500mm)が黒色の紙を貫通した状態で、管ガラス試料を垂直に吊り下げた。その後、下端から指向性のない均質な白色の光を照射し、管ガラス上端面の色調を観察した。同様にして評価した同じ長さの日本電気硝子株式会社製バックライト用ガラスBFKと比較して、明らかに色調が薄ければ「◎」、同等であれば「○」とした。

BaO 0〜20%、
ZnO 0〜15%、
TiO2 2.6〜9%、
As2O3+Sb2O3 0.001〜5%、
含有することを特徴とする照明用ガラス。 - TiO2の含有量が3.5〜9%、As2O3+Sb2O3が0.01〜5%であることを特徴とする請求項1の照明用ガラス。
- TiO2/SiO2がモル比で0.03〜0.08であることを特徴とする請求項1の照明用ガラス。
- さらにFe2O3を0.0001〜0.05%含有することを特徴とする請求項1の照明用ガラス。
- Fe2+の含有量が、FeO換算で0.0030%以下であることを特徴とする請求項4の照明用ガラス。
- 請求項1〜5の何れかの照明用ガラスからなることを特徴とする蛍光ランプ用外套管。
