Abstract

A synthetic lubricant composition comprises a blend of synthetic esters or of one or more such esters and a poly-oxyalkylene compound, such blend being thermally stable at 325 DEG C., and 0.5-1.5% by weight (based on the blend) of an aliphatic thiophosphate or a polymerized or sulphurized (including phosphosulphurized) product thereof. Typical ester blends include a mixture of trimethylpropane tripelargonate and a complex ester formed from trimethyl pentanol, sebacic acid and neopentyl glycol, and a mixture of di-iso-octyl azelate and "Ucon LB 1145" (Trade Mark). A suitable thiophosphate additive is dioleyl dithiophosphate. Optional additives which may be present include phenyl-a -naphthylamine, dioctyl phenothiazine, di-(octylphenyl) amine, phenothiazine, benzthiazole and copolymers of acrylates, fumarates or methacrylates with other polar monomers, e.g. N-vinyl pyrrolidone, maleic anhydride, and alkoxyalkyl or alkylaminoalkyl esters of unsaturated acids.
