Abstract
A fluid lubricant, suitable for reducing friction between contacting solid surfaces at temperatures in excess of 550 DEG F., comprises at least 60% by weight of a dialiphatic ester of a dimer of hydrogenated dimer of one or more ethylenic monocarboxylic acids, at least one of the acids being a polyethylenic acid, each aliphatic group having 1-10 carbon atoms and each acid having 12-22 carbon atoms. Specific esters mentioned are dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl or di (2-ethyl-hexyl) dilinoleate, the dipropyl ester of the dimer of 5,9-dimethyl-2,8-decadienoic acid, the dihexyl ester of the dimer of linolenic acid, the didecyl ester of the dimer of 13,15-docosodienoic acid, and the dibutyl ester of the codimer of oleic and linoleic acids. The lubricant may also contain an antioxidant (e.g. phenothiazine or a blend of phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, p-isopropoxy-diphenylamine and N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine), an extreme pressure of anti-wear additive (e.g. 2,21-dichloro-diphenyl) phenyl phosphate, di (o-chlorophenyl) phenyl phosphate, trialkyl esters of phosphoric acid, mixtures of mono- and di-alkyl esters of phosphoric acid, and rhodanine), and viscosity index improvers or pour point depressors (e.g. polymers or copolymers of alkyl esters of methacrylic acid). In the examples, lubricating compositions are described consisting of the dibutyl ester of the dimer of linoleic acid (a) phenothiazine and di (o-chloro-phenyl) phenyl phosphate, (b) phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, p-isopropoxy-diphenylamine and N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine with or without di (2-ethyl-hexyl) sebacate or (c) di (2-ethylhexyl) azelate, di (2-ethyl-hexyl) sebacate, butyl methacrylate polymer and phenothiazine. For comparison purposes, a composition similar to (c) without the dibutyl dilinoleate is described.
