Abstract

A synthetic lubricating oil composition having a kinematic viscosity of not less than 2.5 cs. at 210 DEG F. and not more than 14000 cs. at - 65 DEG F., comprises a major proportion of a diester oil, 0.5-5% wt. (based on the total composition) of phenothiazine or an alkylated phenothiazine, and 0.1-5% wt. of a dispersant copolymer having an average m.w. less than 250,000 and derived from an unsaturated oxygen and/or nitrogen containing polar monomer and one or more esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid. Polar monomers include maleic anhydride, half-esters of maleic acid with C2- 8 alcohols and alkoxylated derivatives of such half esters, nitriles, cyanoethyl ethers, amines, amides, carbamates, N-vinylbutyrolactams, pyridines and hydrazides. A typical copolymer is one derived from N-vinyl pyrrolidene and a mixture of cetyl, lauryl and methyl methacrylates. The diester may be blended with other synthetic oils, e.g. polyesters, complex esters and polyoxyalkylene glycols and ethers thereof, and many examples of diesters and diester blends with these other oils are given. Optional additives include partial esters of di-, tri or tetra-basic aromatic acids (examples given), stearic acid, mahogany sulphonates, triazoles and silicones.
