Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise a major proportion of a lubricating oil or grease and a phenothiazine of formula <FORM:1023380/C4-C5/1> where Ar and Ar1 are benzene or naphthalene nuclei which may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy, and R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl. The oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil, particularly a neutral carboxylic ester or blend of esters. Specified esters include conventional diesters and "hindered" simple and complex esters derived from primary mono- and poly-hydric alcohols in which there are no carbon atoms attached to the b -carbon atoms, such as trimethylol-alkanes, pentaerythritol, polypentaerythritols, neoglycol and trimethylpentanol. Other substances which may be present include: secondary aromatic amines such as phenyl-naphthylamines, alkyl-substituted diphenylamines and compounds of formula (R1O)m-Ar11-NH-Ar111(OR11)n where Ar is a benzene nucleus and Ar1 is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus (alkyl substituents may be present), R1 and R11 are alkyl, m is 1 or 2 and n is 0 or 1; polyoxyalkylene glycol ethers R-O(R1O)n-R2 where R is alkyl, R1 is alkylene, R2 is H or alkyl and n is an integer; benzotriazole; dicarboxylic acids; polyphenyl ethers; alkyl methacrylate/N-vinylpyrrolidone copolymers and alkyl fumarate/vinyl acetate/N - vinylpyrrolidone copolymers; chlorinated di- or poly-phenyls; calcium petroleum sulphonate.ALSO:Phenothiazines of formula <FORM:1023380/C2/1> where Ar and Ar1 are benzene or naphthalene nuclei which may be substituted by alkyl or alkoxy radicals, and R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl, are prepared by reacting <FORM:1023380/C2/2> with ROH and CH2O. Those compounds of formula <FORM:1023380/C2/3> where Ar and Ar1 are benzene or naphthalene nuclei, R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl, R2 is alkyl, R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, and the sum of the carbon atoms in R2 and R3 is from 8 to 24 are claimed per se.
