Abstract

A lubricating composition, having a flashpoint (open) of at least 400 DEG F., and a viscosity at -40 DEG F. not exceeding 15,000 centistokes, comprises a major proportion of (a) a neutral ester of azelaic or sebacic acid and a branched chain monohydric alcohol, or mixture of such alcohols, containing at least 5 carbon atoms or a mixture of such diesters, and a minor proportion of (b) a substantially water-insoluble polyoxyalkylene glycol ether, or mixture of such ethers having a viscosity of at least 10 centistokes at, 210 DEG F., and (c) a dibenzothiazine having a decomposition temperature of at least 200 DEG C. The term "neutral," as applied to the diesters, is stated to indicate an acidity not exceeding 0.3 mg. KOH/gm. The composition is particularly suitable for lubricating internal-combustion engines, gas turbines and other mechanisms where high temperatures are involved. Ingredient (a) may have the formula R1OOC(CH2)xCOOR2, wherein R1 and R2 are the same of different and are branched-chain alkyl radicles having at least 5 carbon atoms and x is 7 or 8. Ingredient (b) may have the formula RO(R1O)nR2, wherein R is an alkyl group, R2 is H or an alkyl group, and n is an integer greater than 1. Ingredient (c) may be phenothiazine, 10-benzyl-, or 2-ethyl-, 3,7-dioctyl- or 3,7-difluorophenothiazine, N-methyl-, or N-ethyl- or N-acetyl-phenothiazine, phenothiazone-3, phenothiazine-5-oxide, 10,101-diphenothiazine, 8,9-benzo-phenothiazine, or N-methyl-phenothiazine-5-oxide. In addition to ingredients (a), (b) and (c), the composition may also contain other esters such as esters of pentaerythritol or di-pentaerythritol, e.g. pentaerythritol tetracaproate. Instead of ingredient (a), there may be employed a major proportion of a mixture of (i) one or more neutral diesters of azelaic or sebacic acids and branched chain monohydric alcohols or mixtures of alcohols containing at least 5 carbon atoms and (ii) one or more neutral diesters of di- or tri-propylene glycol and n-octoic or pelargonic acids, the relative proportions by weight of type (i) diesters to type (ii) diesters being within the range 0.5 : 1 to 2 : 1. Additional ingredients which may be present in the composition are rustinhibitors (e.g. metal petroleum sulphonates, especially a mineral oil solution of calcium petroleum sulphonate), metal deactivators (e.g. benzotriazole), load-carrying additives (e.g. organic phosphate or phosphite esters), sebacic acid, and chlorinated di- or poly-phenyls. For comparison purposes compositions are described which consist of dioctyl sebacate, an antioxidant, a load-carrying additive and either (1) dinonyl sebacate and polynonyl methacrylate or (2) a polyester derived from 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol, ethylene glycol and sebacic acid.
