Abstract
Lubricants comprise at least one diester of an alkyl succinic acid of the formula <FORM:1099716/C4-C5/1> where R3 is a C4- 10 alkyl group and R1 and R2 are the same or different and represent C6- 10 alkyl groups. Specified esters are the di-n-octyl esters of iso-octyl- and iso-butyl-succinic acids, di-(2-ethylhexyl) iso-octylsuccinate and n-hexyl n-octyl iso-octylsuccinate. The lubricant may include other esters, e.g. those of the above formula in which R3 is a C4- 10 alkenyl group, esters derived from trihydric aliphatic alcohols and long chain monocarboxylic acids, such as trimethylolpropane tripelargonate, and esters derived from C6- 10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and monohydric C8- 10 aliphatic alcohols. The lubricants are particularly useful for high speed engines, e.g. jet engines and gas turbines.ALSO:The invention comprises di-n-octyl isooctylsuccinate, di(2-ethylhexyl) isooctylsuccinate and n-hexyl n-octyl isooctylsuccinate. The compounds are prepared by esterification of the corresponding succinic acids or anhydrides with the appropriate alcohols, preferably in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid. The diesters are used as lubricants (see Division C5). The n-octyl diester of isobutyl succinic acid are prepared in a similar manner. The iso-octyl- and isobutyl-succinic acid anhydrides reactants are prepared by reduction of the corresponding isooctenyl- and isobutenyl compounds, e.g. by hydrogenation over a Raney Ni catalyst. Isooctenyl succinic anhydride is prepared from maleic anhydride and di-isobutylene.
