Abstract

An aqueous chemical nickel plating bath for coating magnesium and its alloys comprises nickel ions, 0.15-1.2 mols/1. hypophosphate ions, the ratio between nickel ions and hypophosphate ions being 0.25 : 1.6, sufficient complexing agent to complex all the nickel, 0.1-0.4 mols/1. of fluoride ions, sufficient hydroxyl ions to produce a pH of 7-9 and a buffering system comprising alkali metal cations and boron oxide anions equivalent to 0.05-0.2 mols/1. of alkali metal tetraborate. The complexing agent preferably comprises 0.08-0..12 mols/1. of an aliphatic aminocarboxylic acid or salt and 0.06-0.1 mols/1. of a hydroxycarboxylic acid or salt. The solution also preferably contains 0.05-0.2 mols/1. ammonium ions and also 30-150 p.p.m. of AsO4 anions. The nickel ions may be derived from the hypophosphate, acetate, sulphate or carbonate of nickel, the hydroxide preferably from NaOH, the ammonium and fluoride ions preferably from ammonium bifluoride and the boron oxide from H3BO3, H2B4O7, Na3BO3 or Na2B4O7. The magnesium or alloy surface is cleaned, pickled first in an aqueous solution containing chromic oxide, nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, second in an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid and finally in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to form a protective film of magnesium fluoride-magnesium hydroxide. The treated surface is then coated in the nickel plating bath and finally heated at 400 DEG F. Optionally the coating may be formed by treating with the plating bath of the invention and then finally coating in an acid nickel plating bath with a pH of 4-6. Specification 821,763 is referred to.
