Abstract

A surface is coated with a film of silver by contacting it with an aqueous ammoniacal silvering solution containing as a reducing agent b - hydroxyethylhydrazine or a salt thereof. Preferably, two aqueous solutions are simultaneously mixed and sprayed on to the surface, one of said solutions comprising silver nitrate and the other comprising b -hydroxyethylhydrazine or a salt thereof e.g. sulphate, at least one of the solutions containing ammonia hydroxide; alternatively, one of the solutions may comprise silver nitrate and the reducing agent, and the other solution may comprise ammonia hydroxide. Small amounts of sodium hydroxide may also be incorporated in the solutions. Transparent and opaque non-conducting materials, e.g. glass and synthetic resins such as polystyrene, polyethylmethacrylate, phenol - aldehyde resins and cellulose esters, may be silvered by this method.
