In a method of treating a mass of loose fibres with a fluid e.g. wool scouring, washing, carbonising and neutralising, or dyeing, the fibres are compressed in a layer and the fluid is applied thereto by means of jets. As shown, raw wool is scoured or similarly treated by being fed between an endless belt 4 of flexible netting or mesh and a drum 3 having a periphery covered by wire mesh. The path so defined by drum and belt lies in part, below the surface of the treating fluid 2 in a tank 1. Treating fluid is fed from the tank by a pump 7 to jets 5, inside the drum and to jets 6 beneath the drum, the jets being so directed as to cause the ejected fluid to impinge upon the layer of fibres. The fibres are removed from the drum by a beater 12 and pass between mangle rollers 13 and 15 to a conveyer 16 which carries them away. A swing- ably mounted roller 8 tensions the belt 4 and so causes the layer of wool to be compressed. Specifications 573,042 and 683,137 are referred to.
