Abstract

1,173,039. Wet treating loose fibrous material. VEPA A.G. 12 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966; 22 Dec., 1966], No. 41583/67. Heading D1L. A process for the wet treatment, e.g. wetting. scouring or rinsing of loose fibrous material such as raw wool comprises pushing the material into a matt for a given period during passage through at least one treatment bath, and then allowing the material to regain its freedom during a free-floating period, the fibres being formed into the matt by the action of a suction drum and finally being passed between at least one pair of squeeze rollers. The fibrous material 3 is fed onto the treatment bath 2. During its passage along the bath it is brought into contact with a plurality of sieve drums 4 which lift the fibrous material out of the liquid bath 2 and form it into a matt. The drums 4 are spaced apart and form a freefloating distance therebetween. At the end of the bath the material passes under a further sieve drum 4 having pumps 5. The liquid sucked in by these pumps is recirculated, being fed back at the entry end of the bath. On leaving drum 4 the fibrous material is passed between a pair of squeeze rollers 14. To assist in removing the matt from the individual sieve drums a nozzle pipe 26 is located in each drum at the liquid level on the downstream side and forces liquid out through each drum at that point. In an alternative embodiment each drum 4 may have a squeeze roller associated with it on the upstream side. The bath is provided with means for removing sludge.
