945,421. Treating fabrics. F. SMITH & CO. (WHITWORTH) Ltd. Sept. 13, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], Nos. 33949/61 and 36147/61. Heading D1L. In liquid treatment of textile materials, paper &c., said material is caused to travel on a concave supporting belt so as to be carried through a quantity of liquor held at a controlled level in the concavity of the belt and the belt with the material thereon is then caused to pass through the nip of a padding mangle almost immediately after leaving the liquor. In the embodiment shown endless belt 15. is looped around rollers 10 and 14 and is of sufficient length to assume a concave arc at zone 16, being constrained to that formation by roller 17 and by convex lower edges 18 of vertical side walls 19, the latter being adjustable with regard to their distance apart. Liquid is sprayed, via pipe 25, into the concavity formed by the belt and the side walls, to form a pool 26 and the level of this pool can be controlled by any suitable known means. In operation a bath 27 is delivered from endless conveyer 28 on to belt 15 and thence to and through pool 26. As the fluid leaves pool 26 it is taken almost immediately through the nip between rollers 9 and 10 where surplus liquid is expressed and it is then separated from belt 15 in the region of an adjustable doctor 23. Roller 10 is driven through variable gear 12 from motor 13 and the same drive means may be used to drive the input feed belt 28 so that the two speeds can be synchronized. Alternatively there can be separate drive means with suitable synchronizing mechanism incorporated. The belt 15 may also be used to convey the material through further treatment apparatus.
