Abstract

1,205,628. Dyeing apparatus. P. ZIMMER. 20 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966; 30 Dec., 1966], No. 52612/67. Heading D1L. Carpet material is dyed by being moved in contact with at least one perforated screen cylinder in a direction transversely of the axis of the cylinder, the area of contact being a strip shaped zone parallel to the cylinder axis, the dyeliquor being applied to the material along said strip shaped zone through the perforations of the cylinder, and the peripheral speed of the screen cylinder being variable relative to the speed of the material to control the intensity of the dyeing. Material is unwound from a roll 2 onto a continuously moving endless belt 7. At a point intermediate the length of travel of the upper run of the belt the material passes beneath a rotating perforated cylinder 8. Dyeliquor is fed to the interior of the cylinder 9 through a pipe 9 and forms a supply 27 (Fig. 3) which is pushed outwardly .through the perforations onto the material by a roller 10 inside the cylinder. The roller is maintained in position above the strip zone of contact by a magnet 11 located immediately below the upper run of the 'belt 7. A common drive serves both the belt and the cylinder but an infinitely variable transmission gear is used for the cylinder so that for any given change in speed of the belt the ratio can be maintained between the belt and cylinder. This is because the cylinder must always rotate with a faster or a slower speed in the strip shaped drying zone than the belt to prevent damage to the material. Preferably the ratio is always 2:1 or 4:1 or vice-versa.
