Abstract

A textile material in the form of a continuous travelling length is treated with liquid by a rotary applicator 9 rotating in a bath 10. This applicator is driven by a drive means from a means responsive to the rate of travel of the material, this being either of rollers 7 and 8 in this embodiment, a belt or chain drive (not shown) driving the applicator 9 so that the speed of rotation of the applicator depends on the rate of rotation of the driving roller, rollers 7 and 8 being driven by the material passing round them, the ratio of the speed of rotation of the applicator to that of the roller driving it being variable, depending on the sizes of the pulleys, spindles or sprockets used. By switching the drive from one roller to the other the applicator roller. may be made to rotate with or against the direction of motion of the material. One of rollers 7 and 8 may be replaced by a rigid bar if not being used for driving the applicator.
