A web of textile materials runs in a zigzag path over sets of rollers 2 and 3 through a treatment tank 4 filled with a treatment liquid and liquid driving means in the form of endless rotating bands 7 are disposed in and rotate in a cross-wise direction to the web to impart a cross flow to the liquid. The band 7 is preferably undulated or ribbed on its face which is turned towards the web. Bands are provided on both sides of the web and run over rollers 9 driven by a belt pulley 12 from a wheel 13. Two contra-rotating bands 7 may be disposed to act from the longitudinal middle of the web (Fig. 5) with baffle plates 17 provided at the return points of the band to reverse the direction of flow of the liquid. The driving band may be divided into several narrower bands (Fig. 3A, not shown), or the driving means may consist of two belts spaced apart and connected by shaped cross members which produce whirling as well as cross flow of the liquid (Fig. 8, not shown). The two spaced apart belts are formed as toothed belts guided over toothed pulleys so ensuring that the driving means located on opposite sides of the web are always at a predetermined position relative to one another. The material may pass through the treatment tank in only one loop (Fig. 2) not shown.
