Abstract

An apparatus for coating liquids on web comprises a bath containing the liquid, a roller mounted to rotate with its lower portion immerse in the liquid, a feed mechanism for traversing the web across the upper portion of the roller, means for holding the web under yielding pressure against the roller, a main motor which is normally effective to operate the feed mechanism and to rotate the roller so that its upper portion travels in the same direction as the web and that the peripheral speed is sufficiently in excess of the linear speed of the web to form and maintain a turbulent head of liquid and a normally ineffective idler motor, operative on stoppage of the main motor, to drive the roller at a slower speed. The web may be held under yielding pressure either by spring-loaded guide rollers or by an air blast and the web is in contact with the roller over an arc of 7 degrees or less. If the feed mechanism, normal a roller driven through a slipping clutch to avoid excess tension, is stopped the roller in the liquid is switched to a lower speed by the use of the idler motor, coupled to the roller by a freewheel connection, which prevents accumulation of liquid on the web.
