1400146 Polychromatic dyeing C NEWTON 29 Aug 1972 [15 July 1971] 33291/71 Heading DIL [Also in Division B6] In a polychromatic dyeing process one or more dye liquors are fed from jets 21 mounted on stationary or transversely reciprocating carriages 20 to 'form a pattern on the horizontal run 16 of an endless, liquid-impermeable belt 12 travelling around support rollers 13, 14 and 15 and a dyeable substrate 11 (e.g. a continuous web or finished garments sandwiched between two liquid permeable carriers) is fed via guide roller 22 to meet the belt 12 as it passes round roller 14 and remain in contact therewith during its downwardly inclined run 17 so that the pattern is transferred to the substrate. As illustrated a roller 14a or 15a may be provided to form a nip with support rollers 14 or 15 to assist the transfer of dye liquor from the belt 12 to the substrate 11. Excess dye liquor is removed from the belt during its return run 18 by a cleaning device 23. The surface of the belt 12 may be provided with ribs, grooves, depressions or protrusions (Figs 2-4, not shown) in any desired arrangement to modify the patterning of the dye liquor and thus of the dyeable substrate. In alternative embodiments further pattern modifications are achieved by arranging the endless belt 12 so that the run 16 which is fed with the dye liquor is inclined either upwardly (Fig 5, not shown) or downwardly (Fig 6, not shown) to the horizontal.
