Abstract
<PICT:0851644/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0851644/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0851644/IV (c)/3> Apparatus for dyeing, washing or otherwise treating loose fibrous materials, slivers or skein yarn comprising at least one drum having a perforated cylindrical outer wall and being rotatably mounted about a horizontal axis, the drum being disposed within a container adapted to hold a treating liquid, and in which the material to be treated is held on said outer drum wall by suction produced by a suction means in communication with the interior of the drum, and wherein the material is saturated with liquid from the container by means of suction, is characterized in that a stationary partition is mounted within the drum and sealed relative to the inner surface of the drum so as to divide the interior of the drum into two chambers of segmental cross-section, one of which is in communication with the suction means and is thus a suction chamber. As shown in Fig. 1 container 1 of liquid 2 houses drum 3 the curved surface of which is perforated. Drum 3 may be mounted on a fixed axle (not shown) and caused to rotate by a motor (not shown) about this axle. Drum 3 contains a stationary partition 5 (integral with the fixed axle) which may have sealing elements 4 at its outer ends abutting the inner surface of drum 3. Partition 5 divides drum 3 into two segmental chambers the lower one being connected to a source of suction e.g. pump 14, while the upper one may contain channels 11, 12 the former due to suction causing fibrous material to be drawn on to the curved surface of drum 3 and the latter due to blowing causing the fibrous material to be detached from the curved surface of drum 3 after treatment. The fibrous material may be squeezed during its passage through liquid 2 between the curved surface of drum 3 and roller 13. In a modification (not shown) the fibrous material may be detached from the curved surface of the perforated drum by means of a stripping roller. Figs. 7 and 8 show a modification in which three perforated drums 17, 18 and 19 are mounted in side by side relationship and are separated by transfer rolls 20. Baffle plate 27 serves to direct the liquid under the pressure of pump 14 for each chamber 7 back into the container beneath the suction chamber. In an embodiment (not shown) five perforated drums are arranged in side by side relationship such that the fibrous material passes in a sinuous path therebetween, the suction chambers being arranged alternately at the bottom or top of each drum.
