In a gas-fired domestic heating appliance 1 with balanced flues, the rectangular flue duct 3 and rectangular air ducts 6 and 7 leading to a recuperator chamber 2 have a height corresponding to the height of one course of bricks. A baffle 8 is fitted to the exterior of wall 4 to protect the ducts from sudden draughts. The number of ducts may be varied, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), and may be offset to allow insertion of mortar. The appliance may be liquid fuel fired and the recuperator may be omitted.
