Abstract
981,790. Zone-melting. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1963 [Dec. 28, 1962], No. 48883/62. Heading B1S. A silicon rod 11 having a diameter of at least 1 inch is zone-melted in a quartz tube 16 by means of a surrounding pancake induction coil 12 which has an upper reverse turn 15 and is associated with two coaxial flat rings 13 and 14 which are of electrically conducting material and which are insulated from one another and from coil 12. Ring 13 is radially slotted and chamfered at its lower outer edge. The coil and rings are immersed in a cooling liquid contained in a bath 7 of non-conducting material.
