A vertical rolling mill with overhead drive comprises a pair of rolls mounted in a laterally movable housing which is detachably connected to a vertically adjustable platform, the platform preventing horizontal movement of the housing parallel to the pass line but allowing transverse removal of the housing when the overhead drive is disconnected. As shown, vertical rolls 76 and 78 are mounted in a housing 38 and are driven from a motor 14 through a gear-box 2, telescopic spindles 16 and 18, and couplings 28 and 30. The housing is clamped to a platform 102 by pivoted tie bolts 104, and the platform is supported at its corners by fixed screws 116, rotation of worm-driven nuts 118 by a motor 132 causing vertical motion of the platform and housing. A trough 110, integral with the platform, directs cooling water and scale into an inclined conduit 114. For renewing or changing the rolls the drive couplings are first disconnected, a cable 50 being actuated, for this purpose, by a lever to lift a rod 54, attached to the cable and guided in sleeves 58 and 60 attached to a protective shield 36, and hence lift a frame 64. The shield 36, having first been uncoupled from the housing at 40, is raised at the same time. The drive spindles 16 and 18 are raised by rollers on the frame 64 co-operating with collars 70 and 72 on the spindles. The housing is thus lowered by motordriven worms 118 until the top of the housing is level with transverse rails 158, the housing is uncoupled by bolts 104 from the platform, and the housing is shifted laterally on to the rails by a piston 160. Lateral movement of the platform is prevented by Watt-linkages 136 while vertical movement is permitted. A vertically adjustable work guide 82 is mounted on bars 88.
