Abstract
915,982. Rolling. UNITED STATES STEEI CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1960 [Aug. 28 1959], No. 28214/60. Class 83 (4). In a rolling mill stand in which the rolls 50, Fig. 3, are profiled to form a plurality of pass openings, the housings 20 are mounted on carriages 19 slidable on ways 18 for alignment of the selected pass or for removing to an outof-the-way position when the roll set is not required. The rolls are driven from a main drive shaft (not shown) through spline shafts 21 coupled to gear-boxes 46 on the housings 20 and extending through splined drives of bevel gear-boxes 23, fixed adjacent the ends of the ways 18. Spindle couplings 49, Fig. 8, are located in the roll housings 20 by eccentric discs 57 which are rotatably adjustable to suit the spacing of the roll centres. The stands are moved by hydraulic rams 38 and are located in the selected positions against downward movement by the interengagement of the teeth of a rack 65, Fig. 5, on the carriage 19 by teeth on a block 60 mounted on a lever 61 and moved in and out of engagement by a second hydraulic cylinder 63 through a link 62. Desired changes may be preset on upward movement by a manually adjustable drum 66 carrying a plurality of spaced dogs 68 as indicated by a pointer 70 which is set according to the number of pass grooves. A pivoted detent 72 on the carriage co-operates with the dogs 68 on upward movement by the ram 38, but is free to ride over the dogs 68 during downward movement. Movement of the housings to an out-of-the-way position is limited by further stops 42 (not shown) which limit the movement of the carriage 19. With the stops 42 released, the carriage moves until the housing engages fixed stops 42a which assist in dislodging it from the carriage when required to be removed. With the housing 19 in the out-of-the-way position, bell-cranks 43 carrying guide sleeves 44 are adapted to swing upwards to support the work along the pass line. Ingress of dirt into the guide ways is prevented by flexible belts 73 attached to the upper ends of the carriages and running over rollers 76 to cover the guide ways 18 as the carriage 19 moves downwards.
