In a furnace or kiln installation including two opposed nozzles 1, at least one of which is a burner nozzle for gaseous, liquid or powdered fuel, the nozzles 1 are so disposed that the interfering jets 2 issuing therefrom produce a flame 3 of disc formation. The burner nozzle 1 may supply fuel with or without auxiliary air, and the other nozzle 1 may discharge preheated air or a gas. The nozzles 1 may be rifled in the same or opposite directions to produce a vortex in the flame or suppress any vortex formation, or the nozzles may be inclined to interfere eccentrically to produce a vortex of flame disposed obliquely of the nozzle axes. The nozzle inclination may be universally adjustable by means of a mechanical drive as in Fig. 4 so that the disposition of the flame may be varied according to a predetermined programme. The disc of flame may be located beside or above a stacked charge in a pottery kiln, or a rotating horizontal disc of flame may be produced above the charge.
