A burner for an open hearth furnace in which a plurality of divergent separate flames issues from each burner in spray-like fashion has a cooling jacket 1 divided by a cylindrical partition 1a divergent gas nozzles 3 and a central supply pipe 4 with a two-way valve 6 possessing connections for oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and air and for compressed air or steam respectively, the pipe 4 branching into manifolds 5. Liquid fuel or an additive such as iron dust or aluminium dust in finely dispersed form may be supplied to the separate flames.
