Abstract

1,028,687. Burners; open-hearth furnaces. COCKERILL-OUGREE S.A. March 3, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 8880/64. Headings F4B and F4T. A burner comprises a plate 8 with holes 11, 12 communicating with ducts carrying fuel and an oxidizing gas, the plate 8 being obliquely mounted on the ends of the ducts. Concentric cylinders 1, 2, 4 are welded to plate 8, oil flowing through cylinder 4 and holes 12, oxygen, air or oxygen enriched air flows between cylinders 2, 4 and issues from holes 11 at twice the speed of sound, and cooling water flows between cylinders 1, 2. Holes 11 partly surround holes 12 and in use in a furnace the holes 11 are at a lower level than holes 12. The holes may be in line and placed in groups including one hole 11 and one hole 12, Fig. 3, not shown, to produce separate flames. The axes of holes 11 may be inclined toward those of holes 12 so that the zone of the flame is at a smaller distance from the burner. Fig. 4 shows three possible arrangements of burners in a furnace: (a) a single burner in a port at P 1 , (b) four burners P 2 at the corners of the bath with the flames directed along the diagonals of the bath base and spaced from it, and (c) burners P 3 mounted in the roof of the furnace and directing their flames towards the downtake side.
