Class 72 [Also in Groups XI and XII] Melting down in an open hearth furnace is carried out using a gas burner with a number of fine jets supplied with gas at 1,000-4,000 millimeters water column, the refining being carried out using a long flame produced by the use of a jet of gas, oil, or powdered coal injected into the hot air at low pressure. As shown, burners 10 have their outermost jets directed parallel to the walls of the furnace while the inner jets are progressively increasingly inclined towards the centre.
