Abstract
975,988. Variable - speed epicyclic gear. BELOIT CORPORATION. July 18, 1962 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 27639/62. Heading F2D. In paper-making or like machinery, a belt pulley 12, driven at a constant speed by a line shaft 10 and driving at a variable speed a machine shaft 18 through a gear-box 17, comprises a counterbalanced output carrier 39 having interengaging planets 36, meshing a ring 35 integral with the pulley rim 19 and 41, drivingly connected, through its step 43, to a control reaction sun 44 which is variably driven from the pulley rim through a pulley 33, a variable speed gear such as the " P.I.V. " gear (Trade Mark) 30 shown, and a pulley 29. A clutch 16 between the carrier 39 and a gearbox 17 may be air operated, shafts 27 and 15 respectively connected to the sun 44 and the carrier being bored and sealed to act as conduits. The output carrier speed is increased and decreased respectively by decreasing and increasing the speed of the sun 44; alternatively this relationship may be reversed by the addition of a further gear in the epicyclic train.
