Abstract

1,060,143. Hydraulic clutches; reverse gearing. NUMERICAL CONTROL CORPORATION. May 12, 1964, No. 19700/64. Headings F2C and F2D. In an hydraulic clutch, particularly for servo mechanisms and regulators, comprising driving and driven rotors 24, 82 drivingly connected by the viscous drag of centrifuged liquid, e.g. oil, in an annular chamber 70 of the driving rotor, the effective contact area between the liquid and the driven rotor is selectively varied by pneumatic or other gaseous pressure transference of the centrifuged liquid to and from the chamber 70. The peripheral zone of the driven rotor 82 and the adjacent wall 90 of the chamber 70 are outwardly tapered. In Fig. 1, the driving and driven rotors are respectively fast with a pulley 28 and a shaft 32. The chamber 70 communicates through an annular passage 74, with an annular reservoir 72 also formed in the driving rotor. The chamber and the reservoir are subjected to varying gaseous pressures respectively through a pipe 128, a bore 112 of the shaft 32, and radial flutes 94 in the driven rotor, and a pipe 130, another bore 114 of the shaft 32, and ducts 79 in the driving rotor. In Fig. 5 (not shown), a forward and reverse belt drive of selectively variable torque transmission comprises two of the above clutches (20), (22), having their driving rotors driven in opposite directions by a motor (40) through a belt (42) tensioned by a spring-loaded jockey pulley (44) and their driven rotors connected by a belt (54) to rotate in the same direction. The output may be either one or both of driven shafts (32), (34). Two independent gaseous pressure sources are respectively connected to the chamber 70 of one clutch and the reservoir 72 of the other clutch, and the reservoir 72 of said one clutch and the chamber 70 of said other clutch. When the equilibrium of pressure of the two sources is disturbed the shafts (32), (34) are rotated in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction and the torque transmitted is dependent on the pressure differential. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the quantity of oil in the reservoir is kept constant by an inwardly directed annular weir permitting excess oil to be returned to a further annular reservoir in the driving rotor, the oil being pumped into the first-mentioned reservoir from said further reservoir by bent tubes which are fast with the driven rotor and have tangentially directed scoop inlets. An external inwardly directed annular weir is provided adjacent an external annular filling groove to limit the oil charging of the rotor which is effected during rotation.
