Abstract
Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0972962/C1/1> (wherein R2 represents an alkyl, alkoxy or trifluoromethyl group or a halogen atom, R3 represents a trifluoromethyl, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, hydroxyalkylthio, nitro, amino, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl, hydroxy or acylamino group or a halogen atom and R4, which can only be present if R3 is other than trifluoromethyl, represents any of the values of R3 except the latter value, and wherein the broken lines denote that the alkyl and R substituents attached thereby are optional) are prepared by reacting a quinazoline derivative of the general formula <FORM:0972962/C1/2> (wherein X represents a halogen atom), or an acid addition salt thereof, with an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide and, in the case where R3 and R4 were absent in the quinazoline derivative, subjecting the benzodiazepine formed to one or more of the steps nitration, reduction of the nitro group and acylation of the amino group in the case where a nitro, amino or acylamino group is required in the product or, in the case where either or both R3 and R4 were nitro or amino in the quinazoline derivative, subjecting if desired the benzodiazepine to reduction and/or acylation where one or two amino or acylamino groups are required in the product.
