Abstract

1296370 Process for the preparation of nitroso- and nitro-phenols FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 30 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 63391/69 Heading C2C p-Nitrosophenols of formula in which the substituents R may be the same or different and each represents a (C 1-4 ) alkyl radical, n is 0, 1 or 2, with the proviso that when n is 1, alkyl substitution is in position 3 and when n is equal to 2, alkyl substitution is in positions 2 and 5, are prepared by nitrosating the corresponding alkali metal phenate with an alkali metal nitrite in the presence of mineral acid at a pH not exceeding 2À2 and a temperature not exceeding 10‹ C. These nitroso compounds may be converted into their nitro derivatives by treating their alkali metal salts with dilute aqueous HNO 3 at a concentration of 10-30% by weight at a temperature not exceeding 50‹ C.
