Abstract

574,271. Explosives. COCKBAIN, E. G., MOILLIET, J. L., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 9, 1942, No. 12706. [Class 9 (ii)] A process for the de-sensitizing of explosives, especially pentaerythritol tetranitrate and cyclo - trimethylenetrinitroamine, comprises adding to a hot aqueous paste of the explosive two ingredients, namely (1) molten wax and (2) a relatively small proportion of a watersoluble salt of either an aliphatic carboxylic acid or an aliphatic or aromatic amine, the acid or amine having at least 8 carbon atoms per molecule. The mixture is stirred with cooling, filtered, and the solid is washed and dried. The wax may be paraffin wax. The salt may be a salt of stearic acid, ricinoleic acid, octadecylamine, #-naphthylamine or diphenylguanidine, e.g. sodium ricinoleate or octadecylamine hydrochloride.
