578,081. Explosives. DAWSON, F., FAJANS, E., MOILLIET, J. L., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 22,1943, No. 4606. [Class 9 (ii)] To eliminate voids and ensure homogeneity in explosive compositions made by adding solids such as ammonium nitrate, pentaerythritol tetranitrate or cyclotrimethylenetrinitroamine to molten T.N.T., a small proportion of a compound having the general formula HO.arylene.N : N.arylene.OH is added to the composition before solidification of the latter, e.g. the compound may be added to the molten T.N.T. either before or after addition of the solids. The two arylene nuclei may be the same or different, and may carry additional substituents. The compound may be o- or phydroxyazo-#-naphthol, or o-hydroxybenzeneazoresorcinol.
