Abstract

972,378. Electric motors. J. RITZ. May 4, 1962 [May 4, 1961], No. 17156/62. Heading H2A. In a canned electric motor each end of the stator cavity is sealed by ring 5, made of elastic material, which is compressed between annular plate 3, having flanges 3a attached (by soldering) to gap tube 1, and compression plate 6. Axial movement of the annular plate is prevented by spring clip 4 and the depressing pressure applied to the sealing ring by screws 7 having on the plate 6 from plate 8 which is retained by clip 9. Lead-in holes for supply cable 11 are made in all the plates and when ring 5 is compressed it seals against the outside of the cable. The anchor plate 8 may be of any shape, but preferably it is constructed as two half plates, Fig. 3 (not shown), and can be used to support the motor bearings. A similar end seal construction may be used when the stator cavity is filled with casting compound, the filling tube being removed when the compound has solidified, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). In another modification when the annular plate at one end is used as a feed head, during casting, an 0-ring is tightened into the gap between the plate and the shell by the bevel edge of the compression plate, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). A further modification, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), shows a sealing ring sandwiched between two annular plates which may be drawn together to compress the elastic ring which is forced into an annular groove in the shell to locate the end assembly.
